I think some of you guys are more interested in collecting "demo" material to show off your systems than appreciating the fine art of film making. That's OK. I'm sure it's a stage most early adopters go through.

Shit man, you really need to reread kowhite's post. First and foremost, what part of summer do you need to have defined to understand it's a SUMMER blockbuster -> i.e. released in the summer season, better defined as around (give or take a month) June 20/21st to Septemer 20/21st. However, movies released in May, June, July, or August are considered Summer movies.

4 or 5 of those movies were actually released in May, but still coincides with the busy "summer" season when school is out.

Hey, for a lot of us, our home theatre is our hobby, something we pride ourselves on developing and having. Much like people rebuilding cars or working on refurbishing things, home theaters are important to a lot of us. We like to show off what we have time to time and there's nothing wrong with that.

It's not an early adopter thing. It's a hobbyist thing. When I get a new component in my system I definitely show it off to friends and family.

It is, since many films since Titanic fit that definition, and it seems downright odd to use a winter film as the definition of a summer blockbuster. Titanic is atypical compared to what usually defines a summer blockbuster...it's atypical to the majority of the films on your list in fact. Transformers 2 has more in common with most of those films than Titanic does (well, barring it simply not being as good a film...Episode I excluded though, that movie sucks).

Titanic was the last film I saw that had "Summer Blockbuster" status where I remember going to see muliple times at the cinema. At various times I took members of my family and friends and they all cried their eyes out. I think movies, with some exceptions of course, have gone downhill in terms of quality since than. I've decided that the Academy Award winning best picture is actually going to be my favorite horror film of the year. Therefore, The Strangers is the Academy Award Best Picture of 2008! What, that doesn't make sense to people? You mean, I can't just make up definitions to things that aren't in sync with what everyone else qualifies it as, and not expect everyone to get confused? It makes as much sense to me...as doing that. The movie landscape of the past few decades has done a good job of defining what a summer blockbuster is. If someone wants to change the definition to be that...have at it...just don't be surprised when it doesn't make sense to most people.

1) There's a lot of could of's, would of's, and should of's in this world, but sometimes it just isn't that way. Titanic was not, I repeat, NOT a summer blockbuster. No matter how you rationalize it.

Honesty may or may not be the best policy but it’s certainly one of the most valuable commodities a critic can have. If you’re writing an opinion piece, you owe it to your readership and yourself to be as open and candid as humanly possible. And so, Constant Reader, I feel it is incumbent that I level with you this week.

I could not bring myself to go see Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen.

This was not a decision I came to lightly, believe it or not. After all, I’ve gone to see plenty of movies that I had little to no interest in for the sole purpose of writing them up in the Electric Theatre. But in this case, I felt that I had already decided months ago that I wasn’t going to like this movie. That attitude is the kiss of death for any filmgoer. You’re basically daring the filmmakers to prove you wrong and the only way they can do that is to make a movie so surprising, so engaging and so unique that you have no choice but to suck it up and admit you were wrong. And let’s face it, Transformers 2 is probably not any of those things.

Under the circumstances, if I were to write a review of this movie, it would be doing a disservice to the film, to myself and to all of you. Instead, I decided to bring in a guest critic. I wanted someone whose taste in movies I respect and trust but was also part of Transformers’ key demographic. Above all, I wanted someone who wasn’t just willing to see it but genuinely wanted to. Fortunately, I didn’t have to look very far.

My guest critic this week is seven-year-old Max Haaga. If the name sounds familiar, you may know his dad, Trent Haaga, from such movies as Terror Firmer, Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV, Easter Bunny, Kill! Kill!, Gimme Skelter and many more. Trent and I co-wrote the book Make Your Own Damn Movie! with Lloyd Kaufman and his movie Deadgirl will be playing midnights in select cities July 24 with a DVD release from Dark Sky Films following on September 15 (it’s already available in Region 2, so snatch up a copy if you can). Trent and his lovely wife, Lynh, graciously allowed Max to cover Transformers for me. Here’s his report.

Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen
Review by Max Haaga (age 7)


The movie was about the Decepticons wanting to blow up the sun. The Autobots were the good Transformers that wanted to stop them.

I liked when those little balls that the tiger Transformer, when he spit them out and they turned into little Transformers. It was funny when a chicken was on an army guy and the army guy said, “Get off of me!”

There was lots of explosions. There were lots of helicopters and army guys.

I’ll give the movie one thumb up. My daddy said the movie made his soul sick and he wants his money back.
