Arrow Target stores lower BD-Live capable Blu-ray player to $225 with $14.99 Bond movies

Target just placed an add in local circulars in most US markets that included a new stock of Samsung BDP1500 BD-Live capable players for $249 with an instant $25 gift card, for net price of $225.

Notable as this is the best price since the holiday season in local circular print advertising, and its effectively $25 below 4Q 2008 prices for BD-Live capable players.

Also included were ads for many Bond Blu-ray movies including Quantum of Solace for $ 24.99 and others for $14.99.

Could entice some Bond fans to buy a Blu-ray player.

BTW example ad is not my personal zipcode, its for Chantilly VA 20151, mine and all random ads I checked have these items YMMV

This may signal a retail trend that may affect this week and future Blu-ray sales.

Notable here as this is a major US retailer that today just started a reduction in BD-Live capable Blu-ray pricing to effectively $225 with gift card, regular price $249 and $14.99 James Bond movies.

It may cause some incremental hardware and software sales and may indicate some clearance sales as new generations of Blu-ray players are starting to arrive.

The advertised Samsung BDP1500 works well as a BD-Live player and needs a USB memory stick to work as BD-Live player with firmware update.

The BDP-1500 is an awesome player I picked up at Xmas for $160 open box. That said, I doubt the old Bond movies are going to attract many new customers. Bond, especially pre-Pierce Brosnan, didn't do big B.O number in America. And everybody has seen these movies on cable a hundred times over. Its also being shown on HD Cable and HD Sat and has been for well over a year.

It is a tie-in with Quantum of Solace being released last week (Target has it for $24.99 on Blu). And you also have to consider the Blu-Ray demographic. It is a smart tie-in. I know I am going there today to pick up a Bond catalog title on Blu-Ray.

How well did the last Bond set track on the Nielsens? The first 6 were a better selection of films then the current 4 (Goldfinger is the only really great one, the others...not so much).

I am not sure. But I would guess that MGM was happy with the numbers as they keep releasing the movies on Blu-Ray. And the restoration/remastering was already done about 5 years ago on most of the titles by Lowry.

MGM really has nothing else they are releasing since they skipped some Day and Dates (City of Ember, College) and their other catalog titles have been MPEG2 crap (Silence of the Lambs, Ronin). Bond was the only reason most people even owned an MGM title last year. Hopefully they push the other 10 or so out faster since we only got 3 this past wave (not counting NSNA).

There is "The Man With The Golden Gun" and "Licensee To Kill" coming in May (I already have them as part of the special Best Buy release with QoS). There are 23 Bond movies total (including "Never Say Never Again") and 14 have already been released. So there are only 9 more left to go. I suspect we will see another 3-6 more being released this year, but they may surprise us and release the remaining 9. Personally, I am very happy with the quality of the Bond Blu-Ray releases and am also happy with their release schedule. But I would not be upset if they cranked out the remaining 9 titles this year.

The 1500 isn't quite as good as the newer 1600... Based on user comments it sounds like the 1600 is both faster and equipped with far better upscaling. That said the 1500 was a very competant bluray player. It wasn't as fast as the PS3 but it wasn't a whole lot slower, the only exception is that it seems samsung players have very poor network through put for some reason which is dissapointing. Other than that I think most people would be pretty happy with a 1500, I certainly was until I upgraded to my 2500 with reon and netflix.

Having to deal with Board members alot, I tend to read the fine print and this always scares me when it says "available in stores only. Prices and availablility may vary".
Bait and Hook is a term and practice used alot. Bait 'em with false hope and Hook 'em with something else/more expensive.

An FYI. If Target does not have any movies in stock for the sale price you can get a rain check. I have done this several times at Target when a sale item was out of stock.

Their rain check system is good and it also works for comparable items. If they actually sold of stock of these Samsung models, in most cases when a similar item arrived in a month or so at the same MSRP you could also use the raincheck on it. YMMV may vary of course, but by corporate policy Target has a very open raincheck policy as long as its redeemed by its expiration date and you got a raincheck in the first place.

Not a question for the movies though. That would always be honored.

They didnt lower the price to $225 its still $249 out of pocket and you get a $25 GC correct? Title makes it sound like the lowered it to $225.00..

Still a decent deal to get people to buy a BD player.

Limited space in title to say all that.

I did add it in the first line of the OP.

Still its an instant $25 gift card and if you can't spend or don't need $25 in a Target store then you are fooling yourself.

Its pretty much as good as cash in a store like Target where you can get 1000s of groceries and household essentials.

This box has been on sale for $199 at Amazon, Best Buy and elsewhere in the past.

    But hey, nice sales pitch.
