Default Warner Says 'Departed' is Most Sold High-Def Title; Trumpets Dual Format Support

Just posted:

Quote:
Warner Home Entertainment today announced that their dual-format release of 'The Departed' is the highest selling high-def disc title, having moved over 100,000 units since its release in February of this year.

Those who keep track of such things may remember that back in March, Sony issued its own press release saying that the Blu-ray edition of 'Casino Royale' (released a full month after 'The Departed') had shipped 100,000 units. The key difference between the two announcements is that Sony's referred to the number of discs shipped, whereas Warner's refers to the number of discs sold.

The other key difference when comparing sales totals for 'The Departed' with any other release from a format-exclusive studio is that Warner's sales count for 'The Departed' includes sales of both the Blu-ray edition *and* the HD DVD edition, since Warner supports both high-def formats, a fact emphasized in the studio's press release, issued early Thursday morning.

Yea, but how many have they sold, and how many are Blu-ray and how many are HD DVD?

And shouldn't this be in the sales forum?

So, after all this time, Casino Royale still hasn't topped 100,000 disc sold? Wow.

Straight up, I think WB is taking it to the next level. No matter what side of the format fence you stand on you have to give respect to how WB handles things. Our HD libraries would be severely lacking without them. And I know you're all buying 300 so don't even front like your not.

Ah well, I'm sure I'll see the "WB is trying to hurt Blu Ray with their low bitrate encodes" shortly.

Heck no. This is prime smackdown material. This thread is going to turn into 3 pages of "I hate WB" posts by the end of the day.

No it's not. I won't allow a flamewar.

And it seems to me that it's more you who is goading people to get into it with you over WB. So just a "friendly warning". Don't stir up trouble where there is none to be found.

Yet it's in the Smackdown section of the forum.

I think you might be reading a little more into my posts than what's actually there but I hear what you're saying.

Kudos to Warners. A great business mindset who leads by example.
I have been enjoying their HD discs recently and look forward to it continuing.

Why does Sony always report units shipped as units sold? First with PS3 systems now with BD's?

Wrong question, as usual.

Question is: Which sells better, the best selling disk on either format, or the best selling neutral disk??
And THAT is a number fence sitting studios will want to know about.

Jed can put a thread wherever he wants.

On to the topic: Didn't the Departed when the Academy Award for Best Picture? This is as it should be.

Because when Sony "ships" units they "sell" them to retailers. Sony is making money on the transactions, and it is the most accurate way for them to understand how much THEY made. Of course, "shipped" units also indicates supply/demand, which indicates whether or not it was successful. It really isn't important to note whether units were sold or shipped, because one can tell from either statistic if the unit is doing good depending. For instance, if a title sells 50k then we know it sold 50k, if a unit shipped 50k then the original manufacturer sold 50k and we don't know how much it sold other than it had a significant market. If a title sells 50k more then it means that 100k copies have been sold, if a title ships 50k more then that means that there is consumer demand for the product. It's really specifics vs. the basic truth.

It has nothing to do with "lies" or "misinformation," it's plainly hot air from anti Sony vigilants who have nothing better to do with their time.

Wrong answer. And Wrong question.

It costs money to produce discs for both formats, and it is important to know sales for both formats for a "fence sitter" to determine what they might make switching to neutral. Unfortunately for hd dvd, the answer is blu-ray sells the most.

Besides, Bd companies like Fox, Disney and Sony fully expect to sell their titles to HD dvd owners after they buy a blu-ray player.
