2009 Blu-ray Sales Metrics Stats: Nielsen/Videoscan/HMM Charts/Ratios/Bestsellers Etc
This is a the newest version ( started January 2009 ) continuation of the Nielsen/Videoscan sales thread.
This thread is for all discussion of Blu-ray sales stats on how Blu-ray sales are compared to DVD . Discussion of the Home Media Magazine stats and all other industry released sales statistics on Blu-ray is encouraged. This mostly will focus on software sales, as we get the most consistent information there, but relevent hardware sales talk is also allowed.
The first ten or so summary posts will be updated weekly by me with a link on this post to the current weekly discussion.
Discussion on current week sales figures are generally near the last couple pages of the thread, with current new weekly data coming in sometime late Wednesday afternoon to late evening when Home Media Magazine and The Hollywood Reporter give initial info on the Nielsen Videoscan first alert data which is released on that day for the last weeks data which ends on Sunday.
I've stopped trying to give a link to the latest week's discussion as the early posting of the Blu-ray and DVD research charts at Home Media magazine's homepage on Wednesday has kinda blended things together. Just go the last few pages of the thread and look for the graphs and charts to find the start of this weeks current discussion.
We get revenue data first and breakouts of how each title sold in relation to the best selling title as an index number. My estimations for the bestselling top 20 DVD titles and top 20 Blu-ray titles unit sales occur a few days to a week later when The-Numbers.com posts its DVD unit sales estimates up so often the top 20 unit sales estimate figures run almost a week behind the revenue charts and graphs..

For the record:
Why and how I do this stuff...
...
Quick question: with all the tables and graphs, WHEN do you find time to watch any movies????

These charts completely include the week ending 1/4/09 data in this years 2009 figures and are counting the 12/28/08 through 12/31/09 data as 2009 revenues . So its reasonable to attribute $10 M of Blu-ray sales on these charts and $100 M in DVD sales that occurred during those days as 2008 sales. These charts show those days as being attributed to YTD 2009 sales and not EOY 2008 sales.

Snow White Blu-ray sales include both packaging versions in DVD and Blu-ray style cases of the 3 Disc Blu-ray/DVD combo pack as Blu-ray format sales as per past practice of Nielsen Videoscan for mixed high definition and standard definition format packaging.
As of 7/19/2009 the pie chart published by HMM was changed to be a revenue market share graph instead of a top best selling 20 DVD title versus top 20 best selling Blu-ray title unit sales comparison.2009 numbers match published HMM issues. 2008 data has been revised 5/5/09. see this post for further information
These are based on the weekly Nielsen Videoscan first alert report numbers plus Home Media Magazine Research estimate of Wal-Mart system sales which are not part of the base Nielsen Videoscan first alert electronic point of sales report.

Methodology and Detailed Notes: Top 20 DVD is from the-numbers.com, Blu-ray total is calculated by HMM pie chart share. These are best understood of the translation of the scale of the The-Numbers.com estimate of the total units sales of the bestselling 20 DVD title sold into Blu-ray and total units by assuming that the Nielsen Videoscan first alert pie chart top 20 DVD versus top 20 Blu-ray can be applied to that number to estimate Blu-ray sales. Even if magnitude is off scale trends are probably accurate.Code:All units and % are top 20 titles that week for each format BD% on chart is BD/(BD+DVD)% of top 20 units (the old pie chart %) Date DVDTop20 DVD% TotalTop20 BD% BDTop20 BD/DVD*100 2009 11/15 10,529,835 81.39% 12,937,505 18.61% 2,407,670 22.87 Up Monsters Inc 11/08 7,976,987 82.32% 9,690,217 17.68% 1,713,230 21.48 G.I. Note that the 1Q 2008 numbers are probably even a bit high as 4% Blu-ray market share (the HMM 1/06 thru 4/20/08) is assumed for those weeks. It is also noted that The-numbers.com attempts to include Wal-Mart in its top 20 DVD figures while the HMM reported Nielsen Videoscan percentages do not.
In the particular case of the week of 3/22/09 where Wal-Mart did not sell the Blu-ray version of the weeks best selling DVD Twilight the numbers for Blu-ray are probably high by 40-50K. 3/29/09 is probably high by my estimate by half that amount or 20-25K.
Note: 3/23/08 was I Am Legend , Enchanted Bee Movie as top DVD sellers
3/15/09 was Pinocchio re release date
http://www.the-numbers.com/dvd/chart...8/20080323.php
Calculations have been revised to take into account relative Blu-ray and DVD market shares.
As the Blu-ray top 20 share % is apparently a market share number, the total reported DVD units would have to be divided by the DVD market share (ie for week of 10/5/08 Blu-ray = 13%, DVD would be 87% market share) to get a total DVD + Blu-ray = total discs sold, that would then be multiplied out by the Blu-ray market share to get the top 20 Blu-ray units sold
In other words the calculation is
DVD top 20 unit sales numbers / DVD top 20 unit sales ratio = (BD + DVD) top 20 unit sales numbers
then to get the Blu-ray top 20 unit sales ...
(BD + DVD) top 20 unit sales numbers X Blu-ray top 20 unit sales ratio = BD top 20 unit sales numbers
or
(BD + DVD) top 20 unit sales numbers - DVD top 20 unit sales numbers = BD top 20 unit sales numbers
(Same calculations would apply for individual Blu-ray sales of a title that is listed on the HMM weekly BD Market share chart where we also have the DVD sales for that title for the week on the-numbers DVD top 20 sales chart)
(BD/DVD*100 is a relative market share index of Blu-ray to DVD sales)
(BD/(DVD+DVD) is the Blu-ray market share expressed as a percentage)
NOTE:
As of 7/19/2009 the pie chart published by HMM was changed to be a revenue market share graph instead of a top best selling 20 DVD title versus top 20 best selling Blu-ray title unit sales comparison.
The top 20 unit Blu-ray marketshare for 7/19/09 was 13% and the top 20 unit marketshare for 7/26/09 was 20% instead of what was published on the HMM website homepage, digital online and print edition (8% and 16%).

Top 20 DVD is from the-numbers.com, Blu-ray total is calculated by HMM pie chart share. Even if magnitude is off scale trends are probably accurate.Code:Date DVDTop20 DVD% TotalTop20 BD% BDTop20 BD/DVD*100 TOTAL FOR PERIOD 2009 4QTD 10/04/09-11/15/09 45,428,602 81.32% 55,510,204 18.68% 10,081,602 23.43 YTD 01/04/09-11/15/09 206,179,641 86.75% 238,268,021 13.25% 32,088,380 15.56 2008 4QTD 10/05/08-11/16/08 42,904,905 89.86% 47,833,785 10.14% 4,928,880 11.33 EO4Q 10/05/08-12/28/08 122,899,904 89.15% 138,415,077 10.85% 15,515,173 12.21 YTD 01/06/08-11/16/08 189,948,227 93.09% 204,177,121 6.91% 14,228,894 7.51 EOY 01/06/08-12/28/08 269,943,226 92.54% 294,758,414 7.46% 24,815,188 8.17 WEEKLY AVERAGE FOR PERIOD Average 4QTD 2009 6,489,800 81.32% 7,930,029 18.68% 1,440,229 23.43 Average YTD 2009 4,482,166 86.75% 5,179,740 13.25% 697,573 15.56 2008 Average 4QTD 2008 5,876,533 89.86% 6,507,603 10.14% 631,070 11.33 Average EO4Q 2008 9,453,839 89.15% 10,647,314 10.85% 1,193,475 12.21 Average YTD 2008 4,129,309 93.09% 4,438,633 6.91% 309,324 7.51 Average EOY 2008 5,191,216 92.54% 5,668,431 7.46% 477,215 8.17 EO4Q 2008 AVERAGES (12 weeks, average per week) 10/05/08 thru 12/28/08 EOY 2008 AVERAGES (52 weeks, average per week) 01/06/08 thru 12/28/08
2007 data is actual Nielsen Videoscan Blu-ray sales data (not just top 20, but entire Blu-ray units sold, leaked from a SPHE report)
NOTE:
As of 7/19/2009 the pie chart published by HMM was changed to be a revenue market share graph instead of a top best selling 20 DVD title versus top 20 best selling Blu-ray title unit sales comparison.
The top 20 unit Blu-ray marketshare for 7/19/09 was 13% and the top 20 unit marketshare for 7/26/09 was 20% instead of what was published on the HMM website homepage, digital online and print edition (8% and 16% were the revenue marketshares for Blu-ray during those weeks).

2008 YTD totals added for reference
Note: This HMM article gave 1Q 2009 numbers,
http://www.homemediamagazine.com/stu...y-stride-15234
These charts include the week ending 1/4/09 data in this years figures while the $189 M figure is not counting the 12/28/08 through 12/31/09 data that is including in the week ending 1/4/09's data. So its reasonable to attribute $9 M of Blu-ray sales on my charts in 2009 to the last three days of 2008.
DVD sales are also overcounted as well by $130 M or so in the same manner..
http://www.homemediamagazine.com/res...arply-q1-15382
$196.62 M is what my charts had shown from 1/4/09 to 3/29/09 and $130.00 M is what I previously had for 1Q 2008 so my estimation of January 2007 Blu-ray sales was a total of $12.8M high for those first 4 weeks that we did not have reported published data (1/06/08 - 1/27/08) . I had 14.53 and 15.97 for the first 2 weeks, so that probably accurate to reduce those weeks to $6.4 M each to be now 1/6/08 being $8.13 M and 1/13/08 being $.9.57 M respectively. 1/20/08 will remain at $8.36 M and 1/27/08 will remain at $7.61M. Those were the only 4 weeks in 2008 that I did not have hard Blu-ray revenue data for, so that gives me a more refined estimate...
Note: HMM since 2/03/08 week with matching 3/01/09 week has been providing updated 2008 revised data for 2008 data. On week ending data 4/26/09 the new published data crossed over to be in conflict with the 4/27/08 data that was published in 2008 HMM. It was identified that HMM has revised its 2009 Blu-ray estimates to better account for Wal-Mart system sales. All Blu-ray info from 2/01/08 through now 4/27/08 has the revised data in the chart.
Blu-ray sales data from 5/04/08 through 9/28/08 on this chart may be 5-20% underestimated and may also be also be underestimated in the 10/05/08 through 12/28/09 period. HMM may provide the revised data soon or it will be updated on a rolling week to week basis.

A year removed from vanquishing HD DVD, Blu-ray DVDs are finally getting some retail respect. At least, according to a forecast from market research firm FutureSource Consulting. The U.K.-based firm released a prediction (PDF) this week saying consumers will buy more than 100m high definition Blu-ray discs across the U.S., Western Europe and Japan in 2009. The company expects 80 million units to sell in the U.S. alone.
A large part of the growth is attributed to decreasing prices for both Blu-ray hardware and the discs themselves. Another lesser reason, FutureSource explains, was preparatory overproduction in 2008. To “fill the channel” and “enable retailers to build their in-store displays,” the industry produced more than 200m discs in 2008 despite only selling 36m. Retailers are now ready for a more aggressive sales push.

Blu-ray “has moved from early adopter phase through to early majority” in the U.S., said Mai Hoang, a senior analyst at FutureSource. The company predicts that by 2012, 50% of U.S. DVD sales will be Blu-ray.
Some critics are skeptical of these near-term numbers. They think the economy – both by pinching consumer spending and by restraining the funds available for big budget movie production – will slow Blu-ray’s adoption.
There are others who question the longer-term cycle and speculate that, as a consequence of evolving digital delivery technologies, Blu-ray’s fall could be as rapid as its ascent.
All things considered, it’s a tea-leaf reading game. However, logic and insider knowledge, at least with regard to Blu-ray’s longevity, if not FutureSource’s 2009 numbers, is on the side of FutureSource. The biggest reason is simple: economics. DVDs remain one of movie studios’ largest revenue generators. Until streaming and VOD services can offer a comparable windfall, content owners are apt to temper the pace of new technologies’ arrival by wielding the weapons imbued in the power of their licensing contracts. Simply put, they’ll limit alternative access to their programming and milk the profits out of Blu-ray until a better money maker is proven out.
Helping out from the other side of the equation is the nature of consumer viewing habits. There, it’s ease and ubiquity that drive major parts of purchase decision making. Until the time comes when digital, delivery technologies are more accessible and convenient, mainstream consumers are more likely to favor striking a balance between packaged goods purchases and digital experimentations.
As Netflix (NFLX) Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos put it in a Wednesday presentation at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet conference,
With DVDs, because it looks like a CD, there’s a natural inclination to attribute the properties of the music business to the movie business. In fact, the consumer interaction with [a DVD] is quite different.
For a DVD, or any packaged media, to be displaced by digital, something better has to come alone. With music, Sarandos says, that clearly happened but it’s not so with DVDs, yet:
An MP3 purchase from iTunes is portable enough to listen to where you listen to music. But today a file or a stream is not as portable as a DVD is. When our subscribers rent a disc, the disc we send them through the mail they can watch everywhere they watch movies. In the car. At the weekend house. In the bedroom. Anywhere they go. And when you transact electronically, you’re still rather limited to where you can consume it.
DVDs are still the most convenient format for personal viewing of videos. Until that changes, they’re not in danger of extinction.
Market data put out by NPD earlier this year, seems to echo that sentiment too. In its Entertainment Trends in America report, the research firm asked people how they watched movies over the past three months. Sixty-seven percent responded that they watched a DVD they owned themselves, while fifty percent said they watched a rental disc. Only 2% paid for a digital video download.
The same study also found that 41% of consumer movie budgets were spent on DVD purchases and 29% on rentals. Eighteen percent was spent at the box office on movie tickets, but only .5% was spent on digital formats over the Internet. NDP found that $8 out of every $10 dollars spent on movies went to DVDs.
While the NPD survey only looked at data in the short term, it was clear digital delivery isn’t close threatening DVD sales today.
So, Blu-ray, 100m discs in 2009? Maybe, or maybe not? That depends on the crystal ball you look at. But, still relevant in 2013, even 2015? Now that's, most likely.
Anecdotally, Netflix’ Sarandos added further support to Blu-ray growth projections with remarks that his company will likely see more than 1 million Blu-ray subscribers by year end – a sign that consumer take up on Blu-ray hardware is accelerating.
Netflix is also forecasting its DVD shipments will continue grow over the next five to ten years (Sarandos didn’t specify DVD format). Amazon’s (AMZN) success with CD sales was cited an example. Amazon, Sarandos said, shipped more CD’s in 2008 than it did in 2007 despite the general decline of the CD.
He explained:
The internet is growing faster than the music business is cratering. Tthe ease and comfort of transacting business online will continue to grow for mainstream consumers and it will grow faster than packaged media will decline.
So, from the perspective of Netflix a business built around DVDs and with its hands well into digital delivery was well – the runway for Blu-ray would appear to be long.

Sony Report Reveals First Look at Absolute Blu-ray and HD DVD Disc Sales Figures
Mon Apr 09, 2007 at 01:54 AM ET
Tags: Disc Sales, Sony (all tags)
Thanks to a new research report from Sony, industry watchers are getting their best look yet at hard high-def disc sales numbers from Nielsen VideoScan, including per-title sales figures for high-def discs released on both next-gen formats.
Focusing on sales data for the week ending March 18 (the same week that Sony's 'Casino Royale' smashed high-def records by shipping 100,000 units to retail), it should come as no surprise that the VideoScan numbers released by Sony are favorable to the studio, with five of its releases ranking among the top-selling next-gen discs that week.
The numbers that week were equally as impressive for Blu-ray, which outsold HD DVD by a ratio of 9:2, and dominated the list of top-selling next-gen discs -- the HD DVD edition of 'The Departed' was the only HD DVD disc to appear among the top ten best selling high-def discs.
But while abstract ratios and percentages like these have been bandied about for several months now, the Sony report goes one step further, providing the first public release of hard sales figures for HD DVD and Blu-ray discs from Nielsen VideoScan, the home entertainment industry's leading source for competitive sales data.
Among the numbers revealed: as of March 18, VideoScan put the cumulative number of Blu-ray titles sold since the format's inception at 844,000 units, versus HD DVD at 708,600.
But perhaps most interesting are the per-title sales numbers for the top ten selling discs across both formats, which are provided both in the form of a weekly tally (again for the week ending March 18), and as year-to-date totals.
While these charts confirm the previously reported strong showings for such A-list titles as 'The Departed' 'Batman Begins' and 'Superman Returns' (with each clocking per-format sales totals since-inception of at least 28,000 units sold), they also demonstrate a very steep drop-off for titles outside of that top rung, with even discs among the top-ten best sellers that week moving fewer than 1000 units apiece:
While we should note that the VideoScan numbers are not all-inclusive (for example, they don't include discs sold at Wal-Mart or some online merchants), the lower sales numbers at the bottom end of weekly list and on display elsewhere in the report (where some titles are listed as selling fewer than 200 units since inception) are certainly still a sobering reminder that both formats still have a long way to go in their shared quest to supplant standard-def DVD.

Hollywood Reporter, Home video biz holding up
Consumer spending on DVDs and Blu-ray Discs, purchases and rental combined, was $10.77 billion in Jan-Jun 08, compared to $10.6 billion in Jan-Jun 07 (up 1.6%).
Spending on disc purchases rose 1.1%, from $6.8bn to $6.87bn.
Rental spending rose 2.6%, from $3.8bn to $3.9bn.
Unit sales were up 1.1%, with consumers buying 412.3 million discs, up from 407.9 million discs in the first half of 2007.
Home entertainment industry analyst Tom Adams isn't surprised about the continued health of the packaged-media business.
"Most analysts are techno-geeks with plenty of money and not much time, while most Americans are not technically savvy, and they have plenty of time but not much money."
Tom Adams, president of Adams Media Research, said, "The fact is, despite what many on Wall Street seem to think, there is very little digital downloading going on. We're talking about $118 million in 2007 spending, and about $254 million this year - so against a $24 billion packaged-media market it'sreally not making much of a dent at this point."
In the first six months of 2008, consumers spent an estimated $194 million on Blu-ray Disc purchases - a gain of nearly 350% from the $43 million that came from high-definition disc sales (BD and HD DVD combined) the first six months of 2007.
Unit sales of Blu-ray Discs in the first half of 2008 were up 340% from the first six months of 2007, according to Nielsen Videoscan data. Studio stimates peg the number of Blu-ray Discs sold in the first six months of the year at 7.37 million units.
