Its seems real likely now that even if no single title does as well as The Dark Knight in either first week release revenues or unit sales that some combination of titles will surpass that revenue mark.

Just looking at the data, its even possible that the week ending 10/25/09 has already surpassed the Blu-ray unit make of The Dark Knight's release week of 12/14/08, if not it was close and the revenues were already in the ballpark, and its Oct not Dec.

The huge Disney Panasonic and Sony advertising campaigns have not even kicked off yet and those are scheduled to have, not exaggerating, Billions of consumer ad impressions are scheduled for the months of November and December to promote Blu-ray.

I agree. Here's last weeks estimated top 20 unit chart as well and even though its not updated yet and won't be until next Tuesday with the 10/25/09 data, with a 19.75% Blu-ray top 20 unit marketshare for the week ending 10/25/09, and at least 1,200,000 Transformers 2 ROTF units alone thats going to be order of magnitude 1,500,000 - 2,000,000 Blu-ray units sold for the week on that chart.

Week ending 10/25/09 will be at least 1,500,000 units on this chart and may be a lot more.

Every other retailer started the Holiday blitz months ago and they are still holding back for a later start date? Ridiculous. People have been buying Holiday gifts for months now as some extra money becomes available to them (as Holiday bonuses are no longer even being given out at J6P jobs). By the time the campaigns hit, some people will be done Holiday shopping (I certainly am).

My wife and I have been shopping for deals all years for kids/family/friends and we are about 80% done with our holiday shopping. There were some great deals over the summer with the recession.

I am waiting on some big deals for Blu-Ray between now and the end of the year though. I scored some great deals last year, via Amazon, Deep Discount, Ebay, etc. Expecting more of the same this year. I am happy with many of the new release prices we are seeing at Amazon, Walmart, etc. And I just picked up Star Trek (2009) for $15.xx and Star Trek First Contact for $12.xx at Best Buy.com yesterday (on Blu-Ray, before tax). Pretty happy with that deal, especially on Star Trek 2009

The Disney Panasonic campaign Blu-ray promotional does not start until after Halloween. From what I understand most of the media weight is scheduled on cable stations just before Black Friday.

I started in mid June and I'm 90% done.

Star Trek for $15? WTF? You must have used some Rewards Zone Coupons. I still have my Amazon pre-order for $22ish.

I know, I saw the Disney ad numerous times but most retail stores have been pushing Christmas for the past few months. It should have started earlier to capture whatever extra money consumers had because its only going to get tighter in the next two months.

No Best Buy has a deal right not on the website. Star Trek (2009) is $20.xx on sale. They are offering another $10 off if you buy it (ST 09) and one of the Star Trek catalog titles from a list for $17.xx (I picked First Contact, which is a pretty good movie IMHO). With the $10 off, First Contact comes to $12.xx and Star Trek 09 comes to $15.xx (before tax, and did in store pickup).

Great deal. Worse case you should cancel you pre-order for $22.xx and pre-order it at Best Buy for $20.xx.

The claimed numbers were from the studio and were North America.

Transformers 2 sells 7.5 million DVD, Blu-ray discs

PHYSICAL: Movie is biggest-selling 2009 title in first-week sales

By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 10/28/2009

OCT. 28 | PHYSICAL: Paramount Home Entertainment sold a healthy 7.5 million DVD/Blu-ray Disc units of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in its first week of release, according to the studio.

This figure encompasses copies going into both sell-through and rental channels in North America.

Transformers, which debuted on Oct. 20, is now ranked as the biggest-selling 2009 title within its debut week at stores.

Paramount also is touting Transformers as the year’s largest first-week Blu-ray release, moving 1.2 million high-definition units in North America.

The strong sales come at a time when the home entertainment industry has had lowered sales. Although rentals rose 9.9% in the third quarter, sell-through for packaged media was down 13.9%, according to DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group.

Transformers’ results is good news for studio executives and retailers alike. This second installment of the franchise nears the 8.3 million North American units sold during the first week of the original Transformers release in 2007. At that point, consumers were not yet reeling with major recession woes, and DVD spending was closer to peak levels.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is this year’s strongest theatrical blockbuster, generating more than $400 million in the U.S.

Summit Home Entertainment’s Twilight is still considered the overall No. 1 title of 2009, with more than 8 million DVD/Blu-ray units sold since its March 21 street, according to the studio. Twilight moved 5.2 million DVD/Blu-ray copies in the U.S. in its own first week of release.

Its a start.

Blu-ray in France is covering for DVDs attrition this year. Thats interesting as the general consensus is that Blu-ray adoption is lagging in Europe compared to North America, so thats a good sign for international Blu-ray sales.
