Default Memorex releasing a Blu-Ray player in Nov, MSRP $269

Memorex Announces $269 Blu-ray Disc Player

Memorex, a portfolio brand of Imation Corp (NYSE: IMN), announced today the availability of the Memorex MVBD-2510 Blu-ray Disc Player featuring advanced Blu-ray Disc (BD) entertainment technology at an outstanding value of less than $270. Memorex also announced that it has expanded its specialty Blu-ray Disc offerings to include a full-line of BD cleaning and storage accessories.

"Our customers want products that bring entertainment into their homes, but at a family-friendly price," said Carla Pihowich, Memorex brand director, Imation Corp. "With this in mind, we have introduced a Blu-ray Disc player that offers consumers the full high-definition viewing experience, but at a price that almost anyone can afford. The high-definition movie experience, with its sharp details and amazing sound quality, is one that brings families and friends together."

Blu-ray Disc, the next-generation optical media format, utilizes the shorter wavelength of blue lasers to store large amounts of data or content on a single disc. This increased capacity of Blu-ray Discs, combined with the advanced technology in Blu-ray Disc players, translates to movies that playback with finer picture quality and superior sound for an unprecedented high definition experience.

Advanced technical features include video resolution of 1080p and video frame rates of 24p and 60p. The product also features Bonus View 1.1, allowing for special functions like "Picture in Picture" viewing for enjoying special content, including director"s commentary, during movie viewing. Audio playback features include Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio decoding and bit stream output, as well as Master Audio bit stream output. The MVBD-2510 features a 7.1 HDMI digital audio output and 5.1 analog audio output. With an MSRP at $269, I think we can expect to see this baby hit $199 for Christmas. I'm also looking forward to seeing what the regular online price for this unit will be.

Although I personally hate Memorex quite a bit, I am happy to see the competition.

Hrmm... Not entierly clear based on this... Does this thing decode DTS-HD as well as DTS-HD/MA?? I kind of always connected those two in my mind, but the way this is written it makes it sounds like there's a distinction. Anyway, this might be a fairly inexpensive route for those people looking for a decoding player and don't need profile 2.0.

Wrong forum, but good to see prices keep dropping and competition keeps heating up.

How long will Toshiba keep its head in the sand? I think we'll see a Kodak Blu-ray player before a Toshiba one.

Their loss.

Right....

Because Blu-ray players are flying off the shelves so quickly right now that Toshiba is obviously being hurt by not spending any money developing one.

Toshiba will probably join the fray eventually. But they'll do it when the heavy lifting has already been done and high volume is more of a certainty.

It does not decode DTS-HD-MA internally. You will need to bitstream. But it is a good sign (with regards to pricing)

$269 MSRP and a much lower street price I would guess ($199-229?)

So Memorex and Chinese manufacturers are entering the market because they just have too much money and want to throw it away on a product that doesn't sell? All Blu-ray player builders are throwing money down a hole like Toshiba did with HD DVD?

Brilliant reasoning.

No doubt. The real reason why they are entering the market is because the DVD player market is saturated with cheap Chinese players and there is little to no money being made most likely. That and the fact that Funai has proven that you can offer cheaper Blu-Ray players and turn a profit

Because we all know the best strategy is to let every one of your competitors have the market to themselves for a few years and then step in. I honestly cant see how HD-DVD ever failed with these geniuses running Toshiba

Exactly! Toshiba is a firm believer in "Last Mover Advantage" where they come to market with a product once everyone is already comfortable with the products they have from manufacturers they trust.

Maybe Toshiba just likes to fight (and lose) uphill battles?

Besides, according to many of the red-rubbers here, Toshiba was making a profit on HD DVD even when the players were $99. Given that HD DVD had "better hardware" why can't they leverage that same manufacturing *magic* to make a $99 Blu-ray player today? Instead they're making high-priced upscalers that work best when you turn their features off.

How many Memorex brand DVD players do you see?

For Memorex, a brand that focuses nearly exclusively on recordable media, to be producing a Blu-Ray PLAYER, it has to mean that they expect positive market growth... enough to jump out of their regular comfort zone of a product line.

You don't see them releasing a special line of recordable media meant for digital download movies (although they do have filmreel DVDRs, so it wouldn't be hard to re-market it).

You're probably right. All they need to do is OEM a Samsung player.... they're being made in a jointly owned plant between the two companies anyways. They could have Blu-Ray players on the market within 1-2 months of making the decision.
