But this isn't gonna appeal to most people who don't have a lot of money. I thought the red laser technology offered by NME was interesting and had potential. It is supposed to be as good as blu-ray but I haven't heard anything about it in awhile. I'm not even sure if these player's made it to the state's.
I showed this link to one of my friends. He owns a retail chain of furniture stores and is a multimillionaire. He said, he's rather just buy a real dlp projector from the movie theatres and get the film if he's going to pay that much.

How does it do better than blu-ray? DIscs are 18gb in size, smaller than a single bd25. What, having 2 or 3 of these discs is superior to 1 or 2 single or double layered blu-rays? Makes no sense.

My thoughts exactly. I mean, the OP and all the following posts have been largely speculation (since Sim2 didn't announce attached studios or pricing, I think it qualifies as "speculation). But, if this were to be a projector/playback/media system costing $10k and/or upwards .....

What is it actually doing better? Deep Color? --that's it? I would sincerely believe that (in time, maybe years) Deep Color would be easily added to BD (Profile 2.5?) for "Super BD" or the like. But, if Sim2 is marketing an entire proprietary format, should there be more about just how much "beyond 1080p" this would be? 4k? 3k?

And, as another post mentioned .... flipping dual-sided dual-layer discs to watch the end of the movie is NOT progress. That reminds me of Laserdisc days (or DVD before better compression & dual-layer was commonly employed).

--Matter of fact (as silly as it sounds), if there was to be a 'high potency' new videophile format to "go beyond" BD, and there was not willingness to wait for the market to migrate to better HD displays & cheaper HD equipment ..... wouldn't it make more sense to employ a 'blue-laser' Laserdisc? I mean, Mr Moneybags Home Theater who can afford the $30k projector and proprietary media doesn't need to actually take these things in the car, does he? A 12" dual-layer blue-laser Laserdisc would probably easily allow 4k & high res 192khz/24bit 7.1 audio for a 3-4hr movie.

Hmmm. Didn't Sony just say that blu-ray would be the last optical disc format? I guess the Movie Studios forgot to tell them they had other plans...

I guess 4 red laser DVDs @ 18Gb must be cheaper than 1 BD50....

4000 titles + many new movies...Studio's message clear as mud for videophiles as well as J6P!!!

You must not know what is out there for regular DVD. I had two different Sony changers that read both sides of a disc without a problem (and no physical disc flipping). One of them was from 2002.

For everyone that doesn't know this system, the movies are not read off the disc. They are loaded to the server from the discs.

Hehe, didn't you get the memo? According to some people here, Sony isn't a viable solution coz they're the "enemy"

I'm sure if the data rates are actually 3 times that of BD movies that it will not only require flipping, but disc swapping as well, as it would take three discs to even have the storage of one BD50.

I considered myself a HD DVD cheerleader (no regrets either) but its time for folks to move on. I can't understand the OPs resistance to BD. I love HD optical, downloads do not appeal to me so I bought a BD player, actually have three now, Panny BD10, Panny BD30, and now the Pioneer BDP 51FD. All three players have some shortcomings, but they deliver on the hd line for both PQ and AQ.

I just don't understand Mike's obession with blu-rays demise.

Maybe because he firmly believes it will happen.

Can Sim2 Be Better Than Blu?
A new high-def format hopes to enter the competition.
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (September 12, 2008) -- The high-def disc format war is over, right?

Well, don't tell that to Entertainment Experience, a start-up company that hopes to launch a new high-def disc format in partnership with Sim2, the manufacturer of high-end Home Theater projectors.

Video Business reports that the companies announced last week at the CEDIA convention in Denver that it would introduce the new format in January, aiming its sights at the Blu-ray high-def disc.

Blu-ray defeated rival HD DVD earlier this year after a bitter 18-month-long battle that finally concluded when the major studios sided overwhelmingly with Blu. The format war slowed high-def disc sales and forced the CE industry to lower player prices faster than anticipated.

Consequently, Video Business reports, the studios are likely to be reluctant to embrace this new format.

“This high-def alternative is bull; it’s all about Blu-ray,” one industry source told Video Business. “They’re grasping at straws. The entire industry is all behind Blu-ray.”

Entertainment Experience officials said at CEDIA that Sim2 projection TVs would be bundled with the new high-def discs, which are likely to cost around $40.

I have three words for this new format: Dead On Arrival.
