Hmmm. Didn't Sony just say that blu-ray would be the last optical disc format? I guess the Movie Studios forgot to tell them they had other plans...

I guess 4 red laser DVDs @ 18Gb must be cheaper than 1 BD50....

4000 titles + many new movies...Studio's message clear as mud for videophiles as well as J6P!!!

I was afraid that I would grow to hate bill murray as he is your avatar, but you always give me so many laughs, it's like you are bill murray. Thanks for not ruining that actors avatar for me.

It's like a pavlovian thing, sometimes when I see bill paxton I get nauseous (volume11 etc).

$32,000!!! LOL! Let's see, that's either 1,600 Blu discs or this one player and no disc, unless they include a free movie in the box.

Oh.. One more thing.. We are moving.. I sold the house and bought this here RV:

HaHa, OC3 (155.520 Mbps) is so last year. You need to upgrade to OC3072 (159.252 Gbps). I can't even begin to imagine how much one of those cost you a month.

isn't that the same as HD-DVD? And that failed so I don't think this will work.

Unless I read it wrong, if it's dual sided, doesn't that mean we're back to the days of flipping the disc over halfway through the movie? That doesn't sound like much of an improvement.

EDIT: I read the original article again and it kind of sounds like you're supposed to install the content to the HD before playback, so I don't know if it really counts as an optical playback medium in the same way as BD, DVD, CD, etc. I guess if you can afford a $30K projector you can have your butler do the install for you in time for movie night .

They way I understand it is the discs are downloaded to the server. Alan Gouger over at AVS is involved in this venture. Sounds exciting.

This is not going to compete with bluray. This is just a way for us who have to have the very best quality movies.

Yep I just reread it and got that impression as well. It does sound kind of interesting actually for very high end home theaters.

It also sounds like you can use it with any projector as long as it has hdmi hdcp. Of course you won't get the benefits of the deeper color and all, but its a start.

I will do everythiung in my power to hold back and just wait until my 720p panny PJ bites the dust before getting into this. I have too many bills to pay.

There Mikey goes again, posting more vaporware/FUD threads.

Goodbye Mikey, so long, see you next month with your next useless thread.

And once again Mikemorel posts "anything but blu-ray will be successful" thread and conveniently disappears... another day, another blu-ray killer... the hitlist on Blu-Ray grows and grows, but nothing seems to be working

Somewhere on that thread it's pointed out that while it's fun to say "$30,000 HA HA HA" that's only for the projector. The actual drives, says this person, are more like $150-200.

I'm not interested, myself, for the same reason I buy CDs instead of buying entire albums on mp3: it's all fun and games until your hard drive dies. And it will.

I've got the Westinghouse TX-42F430S 42" 1080p LCD. I know you may have heard bad things about it, but I've got to tell you: Never buy the Westinghouse TX-42F430S 42" 1080p LCD.
