Default Toshiba/HD DVD reach 100K standalone sales

http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/070417/sftu090.html?.v=96

"Marking the first anniversary of HD DVD hardware and movies sold to consumers, the North American HD DVD Promotional Group announced today that sales of dedicated HD DVD consumer electronics players reached more than 100K units sold in the United States, ahead of any other high definition format. This figure does not include sales of HD DVD PC drives or the Xbox 360 HD DVD player, which are also selling strongly."

Good news for HD DVD. Kinda. I wonder how many Blu-Ray players have been sold to date? I think both formats need to pickup the standalone player sales pace....

Sorry, standalone does not include the "bonus" blu-ray drive that comes in the PS3 (which I might ad many people don't use for movies).

Great news. It will be standalones that decide this format war, not the fanboyish video game players.

Then please explain why blu ray disk sales start kicking HD DVD's ass after the PS3 was released?

It is really sad when you are blinded by your own bias to see the truth for what is.

The one thing that will never be known is how many PS3's will be used for movies only and how many will be used for games only. Since this is a multifunctional machine, is there really a point in trying to quantify those numbers anyway?

I think this statement may have been true about 10 years ago. But the line between video game machines, and a home media machine are getting pretty blurry. Granted, my father (who is in his 50's) may not run out and buy a PS3 as his standalone player, but I am in my 30's and definitely considered buying a PS3 as my main Blu-Ray player. The PS3 is an excellent Blu-Ray player, and there are quite a few folks on this site that use it primarily as a Blu-Ray player.

In 10 years or less we may not even have standalone players anymore. When you consider that every HD DVD player is required to have internet connectivity as part of the specs, I think we are getting there quicker than you realize...

ack bak & Spacejamz -

You guys don't realize that soon enough stand alones for both formats will be a lot cheaper than the PS3. Yes, the PS3 is the best Blu-ray player for early adopters but a year from now that will not be the case.

Sure Blu-ray got a nice boost from the PS3 but we have seen the boost isn't really as much as Sony had hoped.

The consumers who purchased a P3 will still account for a large percentage of blu ray sales, so to say they will not be a factor of the format war is nonsense...

Totally including PS3's is not accurate and neither is totally excluding them if you're comparing to BR. But this thread is not really anything to compare to BR. It's simply a count of stand alone players which isn't as fair since some bought PS3's as BR as well.
