Hmm, well we'll have to see what happens when the player is actually released into the wild. I get the feeling that competing against the S550 which Sony has already publicly stated doesn't need the USB trick and the Sammy 2500 this player simply won't be able to compete at all at it's price point.

If they lower this to the ~$400 MSRP or $500 on the absolute high end it'd do a lot better since at least you can add in an SD card for extra memory.

At the very, very least you'd think they'd have thrown an $8 SD card into the box.

No doubt.. I have always been a big fan of Panasonic electronics, but I am very unimpressed by some of the decisions made with regards to the BD50 (price and the omission of the required memory).

nope it says 5500 on the pcb.

guess that furthers the hopes that we dont have to worry about if the 5000 is not getting bd live then neither is the 1500 , its not even the same deck.

I get the feeling the 1500 is the bd 5500 remarketed as solo blu ray to cut the cost of the drive so they dont lose their buts on the other hardware.

lastly it is mandatory to have 1.0 GB of memory for profile 2.0 but not to have BD Live. I bet you anything BD Live will work with anything long as you have some memory to save content. 1 GB is just the mandated amount for 2.0 so people have more than enough to download trailers in HD.

On that last point, I'm not so sure. Even with (at least) 512MB of memory, I couldn't access the MOLOG on Rambo BD...but I think that's to be expected unless they get around to enabling/writing code for 2.0 for the BD-UP5000 in the actual firmware.

What makes you say that? how much data do you really think they need to save on your player? Unless I missed somethign they have a set number of image overlays you can use, in which case they store which image template, the text to overlay it (in the case of a speach bubble) the x,y positioning of say the upper left hand corner and if there needs to be a resize of the image (if that's even supported) by how much. That's not a lot of data, not even for a full movies worth of molog.
