Based on the current situation, I would be a little surprised if we didn't see a Blu-Ray add on drive for the XBox 360/Elite sometime around the holiday season.

Based on the current situation you are smoking some good crack.
What current situation are you speaking of? The fact that with the recent releases HD DVD and Blu-ray are just about even for the past 2 weeks?
Or the fact that Microsoft would love to give royalties to their #1 competitor?
I can't believe people really think this is a possibility. -

No, based on MS's own comments, continued sales trends since December of last year, and a few other things I can't talk about.
It's an incestuous industry, Toshiba already provides technology to the PS3 and buys Batteries from Sony. All those XBox and XBox 360 games on DVD already put royalty money into Sony's pockets anyways. It's not even REMOTELY a big deal.
Last year it wasn't a likely possability.... a lot has changed. And if you think even HALF of what is happening in this war ever makes it to public information, then you're fooling yourself.
Let me put it this way. In the scale of things, there are the following people:
1) general comsumer sheeple who know essentially nothing
2) enthusiasts who follow most press releases, and generally know most of what is publically available
3) Industry insiders (outer level), work on some level within the industry, and have direct and indirect connections throughout the industry.
4) Industry insider (inner level), high level job within the industry, usually for one of the major players. Has incredibly good connections within their area, but tend to be lacking when it comes to some areas such as their competition (Samsung wouldn't know about Lite-On inside info for instance).
Of those 4 categories, most people on this forum rank a 2. Someone like Amir is obviously a 4. Where do you fall on that list?<--- From the Island of the Blu Dolphin --->

I'm not trying to say I'm an insider at all. The comments by Microsoft that started up this rumor was from someone at Microsoft UK. Sorry but I don't hold that with as much cred because they are mostly marketing people. And marketing to a secondary region.
I see no reason why MS would ever release a Blu-ray player. If HD DVD fails then they will be perfectly happy with HD Downloads. -

Yup, and that's fine. It's perfectly reasonable to only put faith in the things officially presented. It can save you a lot of trouble in the long run too, when things don't go as planned.
Half of the reason that inside news never makes it to the public circles is because there is too much chance of things changing between the time things are known and the time they are supposed to happen in theory. And there is nothing more embarressing then saying "x is going to happen" and then it never does....
And for the record, I would be a 3 on that list
I won't say where I work, because I prefer a level of anonymity, but it's a broker for the largest replication companies in North America and Europe, including Sony and Cinram (and I deal with both directly), my job also requires me to work directly with several optical media manufacturers, and my job at CDRlabs.com as a drive reviewer connects me directly with many optical drive manufacturers. Unfortunately, a lot of the stuff I am told falls into NDA territory.

I always feel left out of discussions like this . . . so now I am officially admitting that I am also an insider! I have lots of inside information! I just cannot share any of it with you . . .
Sorry, I'm just jealous is all.Last edited by rmslives; 04-04-2007 at 03:20 PM.

This has got to be one of the most ridiculous threads I've ever read. I feel a bit dumber...
Do you Sony fanboys really think that Blu-ray is sooooo superior that the Xbox, which plays HD DVDs beautifully, couldn't handle it?!?! Even via an add-on similar to the HD DVD? Puh-leeeez
. Let's see your calculations. Check my sig, I have and love both, but it must be great to live in your guys' world and view everything through a Kool-aid-induced, sugar-high euphoria.
Go watch your after-school cartoons...
