Default PS3 Gets DTS-HD-MA Decoding. Now the most complete BD Player

What a great way to open the forums

IMHO, the PS3 is now the most complete BD player out there and one that I would recommend to somebody who owns an HDMI receiver and is on a budget to spend less than $400.

Awesome. Now do I wait for the MSG4 bundle with the Dualshocks? I think that is 80gb, hopefully still with BC and SACD. Or do I wait for the upcoming 120/160gb version (is this still tbd??? i have lost track of the ps3 iterations, both past and future).

There's no official announcements about any future SKUs with bigger hard drives for now. That may change after this year's E3--which is usually where most major announcements are made by the gaming industry--but for now, the newest bundle is that Metal Gear/Dualshock 80GB bundle you mentioned with software emulated backwards compatibility, and SACD playback.

With the forums down yesterday, it seems so anti-climatic now...lol

When I get my second BD player a stand alone would have to be less than half as much as the PS3 for me to consider not just getting a second PS3. It just does too much too well.

I'm a happy camper!

But, this will not dry up the market for standalones, even ones that are not BD-Live and DTSHD-MA capable. A lot of people would rather not use a game console for movies, or need analog outs.

I would probably pay $100 more for a new model that had analog outs, a standard A/V component size/shape and an LCD screen for A/V settings and track names.

I wonder too. I think there have been quite a few people holding out for a complete BD player. The PS3 is now complete. I am sure some people will insist on buying a standalone, but I also think quite a few people will jump on the PS3 now.

That may be true, but unfortunately it's unlikely that enough other people would to make it worth Sony's time to design and manufacture.

I don't understand why people were holding out... wasn't it obvious that the PS3 is upgradeable and that they would be doing this sooner or later?

I'd say just do the 80 gig. Unlike the 360, the PS3 uses standard 2.5 inch hard drives, so you can just swap it out with a bigger one if you so please.

I think it was obvious, but some people were wondering (count me as one of those) if Sony was waiting to release DTS-HD-MA support until more standalone players supported it. I guess the answer is no

I for one think this is great for the PS3 but will still continue down the SA route for my home theater. I just prefer SA's, that's about all there is to that one. It's not a priority, but I do plan on eventually getting a PS3 (one with BC) for gaming though, round out my next gen console collection as it were.

I will most likely pickup a standalone when the loading and response (BD-J) are up to par and there are complete players out in the $200-250 price range. Ideally the SA would have improved PQ (BD/DVD) over the PS3 as well as the ability to bitstream the advanced audio codecs. I just think it might be awhile Especially with regards to loading and BD-J response times.
