Blu-ray vs DVD sales week ended 3/30 Blu-ray 8% DVD 92%
I see that Home Media Magazine is now reporting Blu-ray vs DVD sales comparison. For the week ended 3/30
Blu-ray 8%
DVD 92%

These figures are for the top 20 Blu-ray and DVD unit volume. It is not realistic to compare total sales, as DVD has 85,528 titles released in the USA and Blu-ray has only 460 titles.
I read that for the individual titles released day and date with DVD that Blu-ray is selling about 10-15% of the total copies. At this stage in the formats life that is good news.Last edited by zzap64; 04-06-2008 at 09:17 AM.

I thought blu-ray was less than 1% of the market? At least that's what all the SUC ... sorry HD download ... sorry ex_HD-DVD supporters tell me

The "SUC/HD download/HD-DVD supporters" are comparing the total sales of Blu-ray to DVD, which yes would be less than 1%. They are doing this just to flamebait as comparing the total unit sales of Blu-ray to DVD has no relevance as DVD has 85,528 titles released in the USA and Blu-ray has only 460. The market researchers have a much more useful comparison by comparing the top 20 titles of both formats and also the individual titles. If a day and date release sells 10% of total unit sales on Blu-ray I'm sure the studios are delighted. I believe Blu-ray is selling well and showing strong growth.
Remember DVD did not outsell VHS until 2002, 5 years after the format was released and this was without a format war and every studio releasing on DVD throughout the 5 years.

It would be interesting to see all BD releases vs the same on DVD. That would be a more informative. As far as the 6 years goes, BD doesn't have 6 years to get it's act together. There is far better technology on the horizon and it is more in line with what the consumer considers "next gen". Hopefully, BD will be a bump in the road and we can move on quickly to a better format.

Wow. This post is just depressing.
If you are so unimpressed with the current HD formats (HD DVD/bluray), then why did you buy into both, Mr. Teh Purple Avenger8or?
Why didn't you wait for the "far better technology...[that] is more in line with what the consumer considers "next gen""? Why spend your hard-earned money on both current HD formats if you are/were so sour with them?
Why would you want both of the technologies you invested in to be "bump[s] in the road"? How many movies do you have? Why would you want bluray to fail if you have invested in it? Do you want your money to go to waste?
You are purple, right?
I can understand being pissed off about HD DVD failing, but why would you wish the same for bluray if you are purple? Especially after being screwed by HD DVD already? Why do you wish the downfall of both? I don't understand this viewpoint from someone who is purple...
And how do you know what consumers consider "next gen"? Are you representative of everyone?

With far better technology you don't refer to HD-Downloads do you?
Because theres no other physical medium (I believe) after blu-ray.
Having no competence yes, blu-ray have the time, even though I believe BD can do much better then DVD, the problem is that BD depends much on the studios like DVD did, and dvd had good support from all of them.
09 is crucial for BD they need to get the most out of the platform if they want to establish a solid market, that's what I think.

I believe that DD is a rental model and will be for some time to come, but I do believe that we only have a small window to get a truly great retail format. I realize that most of you think that BD is "good enough", but in the next couple of years there will be the ability to have something that is far better.

Please share, oh wise one.
If bluray is only "good enough" to you - THEN WHY DID YOU BUY IT? You did buy it, right Purple Avenger8or?
Oh,and I assume you are talking about 4k...why didn't you just wait instead of buying into HD DVD and Bluray, Purple Avenger8or?
Why buy into "good enough"?

That's where you and I differ. I don't care what I bought. I want a truly great video format. It has nothing to do with HDDVD failing, that is projecting on your and other's parts. This is just proof of who you are. A gamer that is only into this because his favorite game machine has it. A lot of us have been through many AV format and devices. We buy them because we want the content to be the best it can be. I have been spent a small fortune on DVD, should I not want better quality because of that? By your logic I should never buy anything else.

Wow, what a hypocrite. You have no idea what media I have, yet you make these assumptions. Talk about projecting...
I am by far not a gamer. I have 1 PS3 game (Army of Two). I think 21 blurays. And about 100 DVDs. Maybe about 100 CDs too. How does that stack up to your assumptions sir? I use my PS3 primarily as a movie watching device. Very rarely for gaming. Nice try though.
You still didn't answer my question - why did you buy into HDM if you think they are only "good enough"? If you didn't think it was that great of an advancement, why were you purple? Not only did you buy one format, but both. Yet now you are talking shit about them like they aren't so great. Then why did you jump in? Seems contradictory....Last edited by bt12483; 04-06-2008 at 01:19 PM.
