    Default HD DVD's Comeback (Rank #1, 3, 4)

So HD DVD now has the #1 ranked HD disc on Amazon with Children of Men.

Casino Royale is #2 but HD DVD has #3 with Happy Feet & #4 with The Matrix Set.

Does anyone really belive that this format was is already over? It should be pretty apparent both formats are in for the long haul.

I think it won't be long before some companies start announcing dual format support.

My question is will it be Samsung with a player or Disney/Fox that does dual format first?

Great, it just shows that it was a temporary spike for blu-rays.

What comeback? All 3 of those are pre-orders and the top 10 HD rankings (pre-orders+sales) still look like this:

Btw, the Departed (HD-DVD) was at #20+ for a long while and it only sold 13,000 the first week versus 20,000+ for the blu-ray version.....

The actual sales of title are:

Does not look like much of a "comeback" to me...

No man, this is wrong. "Children Of Men" isn't #1 on Amazon's sale or Top Ten so it's teh fail. Just wanted to get the BR fanboy response out of the way.

Overall sales rankings are still better because Blu-ray has more titles released recently.

But the overall gap has narrowed significantly with 2 new releases coming out. Just proving that both formats are very much alive and kicking.

Did you actually look at the sales numbers...the sales ratio went from 2:1 blu-ray to 4:1 blu-ray...not exactly a "narrowing" of the gap.

As we can see from this thread on AVS:

    http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...&#post10015111

It seems the latest HD DVD fanboy tactic is to focus all their firepower on Amazon.

This will change the Amazon charts. Congratulations.

Most of us wait for the weekly Nielsen VideoScan figures to get the picture of the wider market.

Yes, it's great when Casino Royale stays in the top 10 and gets as high as #6, but even then I believe it was selling fewer than 500 copies a day on Amazon. This is the problem with Amazon. New announcements see insane surges jumping a title thousands of places in a few hours.

Amazon is a rough guide to the market. If you want to use Amazon look at the top 25 or 50 - gives you a more accurate picture because you see a larger sample size. Even then it's distorted because it includes pre-orders as well as actual unit sales.

If you want to track the success of a title simply follow its progress after the release date. If it's a genuine big seller it will stay higher for longer. If it's a low seller then you will see a rapid fall-off in sales following launch. For example:

I reckon we'll see a similar pattern following the release of Happy Feet. The Blu-ray will stay high and the HD DVD will nosedive.

That is obviously due to one blockbuster title.
I don't even have to name names.

Of course Blu-ray is doing better when you look at the top 50 because they have more releases coming out the past few months.

HD DVD still hold 3 of the top 5 spots and 4 of the top 6 spots for the time being. But its a dead format right? haha.

Yep. Happy Feet on HD DVD may beat blu-ray out the gate, but the install base for blu-ray is so much bigger that long term it'll come back. Although trends like this should help show some studios that HD DVD fans are willing to buy their titles.

People pre-order, but then nobody is left after the movie goes on sale.

So, at the end of the day (week/month/year) you still end up with HD DVD sitting miserably behind Blu-ray on sales. In a few weeks, with Happy Feet out you will see the same sort of graph for that title. It's a nifty thing that we can focus on a single title like that because it clearly highlights just how far behind HD DVD truly is.

Dead? I think those were the typings of the original poster, not something that anyone else in this thread has said. But, if you think HD DVD is dead, go for it.

I would argue against your point DED. This is a family title and in doing so sells to a different demographic then most who own a PS3. You can see this in sales of "The Departed", "Casino Royale" and "Crank".

We are forgetting all these are Pre-orders, lets see what happens at end of week - I don't believe its going to alter the graphs much at all.

Actually, the rapid drop-off simply shows there is not that much content out for older HD-DVD buyers and they tend to concentrate buying on certain titles.
