You or Nielsen Videoscan... Gee, I wonder which is the more reputable source? How to choose, how to choose.
I will forward your valued analysis of HD disc buying trends onto Universal, Fox, Sony, and Buena Vista so that they can seriously consider your expertise as well. I'm sure they will throw out the Videoscan numbers in a second when your numbers come across their desks.
Seriously, a graph that gives an example of what is going on with HD DVD on one site... That's all it is. But as an indicator, Amazon is often pretty good. So, it isn't proof of what WILL happen with Happy Feet, but it is an indicator of what has happened with another recent movie and could happen again.
I'm of the belief that it will happen again and we will have a new graph that looks very similar to The Departed for Happy Feet. -

i agree here with kalim, but also the poster who said that hd dvd's fan boys are buying via amazon to keep up rankings.
anyhow you cut it, overall format sales are what matters. with BR taking a 4:1 lead in sales and likely to grow more over the next months, it's going to be an interesting thing to watch.
the only thing that is throwing a real wrench into BR putting away HD DVD is that Warners is so fierce about releasing HD DVD product before comparable Blu-Ray. not day and date release.
The Matrix is obviously going to be a rally point for HD DVD fans and will skew sales that month to less disadvantage that format.
but... just wish this war would get put away some more. -

I think Warner wants to help even the playing field a bit to make sure both formats survive. If one format dies then they wasted a lot of money on their Total HD discs.

Clearly we see with the recent success of HF, The Matrix Trilogy Ultimate pre-orders and CoM that HD DVD people want "fresh" content or classics and they will buy when offered a choice.
Not a surprise when you consider that Amazon data shows the standalone Toshiba players are selling well. April 1st drops the price and makes HD DVD more affordable to even more people.
By June we'll have the first players coming from China/Taiwan using the MS/Broadcom Reference design. My guess is they'll be $299 and flood your Walmarts, Targets and other stores.
The BDA knew they had to attempt to knockout HD DVD before they reached traction but their admittal that they won't have parity in player specification (Persistent storage, ethernet, full interactivity support) until Oct 2007 does NOT bode well.
The PS3 launch in Eur and Aus hasn't exactly lit the world on fire. HD DVD is looking pretty damn good right now.VHS must DIE!! -

I like to call this the "Starvation Effect." It's like the PS3 Effect in that it is responsible for a big jump in sales. Imagine a homeless man who hasn't eaten in days and goes into a shelter on Christmas where he sees this beautiful feast. He's just so hungry that he eats EVERYTHING, even stuff he might not eat otherwise.

Given the current sales of HD DVD disks in 2007, the only way it could go was up

The press release was from Fox and not Sony. As I have said before, (before Fox postponed Mr. and Mrs Smith) I don't give much credit to Fox. I haven't seen any Blu-ray fanbois saying that HD-DVD is dead. Dying, crushed, not doing well, not selling good yes but not dead as in dead now.
