Well when the P$3 was giving away rebates for the movies HD DVD Fan Boys complained. The rebates were only like $10.00. but now Toshiba is giving away 9 movies free. So I thought should be in smack down

The PS3 rebates are not a big deal, they are only a select group of movies. I actually submit wrong ones in and they at least sent back the request and mail two more that were actually on it the list. I forgot all about it until couple months later after reading in forum here from James.

This week you get 2 free Blu-rays with the purchase of a $999.99 Sony player.
It's just marketing. Nothing of desperation of either side. -

The coupons with the PS3 were not a big deal. I did not use a single one. They are very limited titles that suck.

I'm not too impressed with CC's offer. Remeber that the MSRP for the HD-A2 is going to be $399.00 on April 1, which means it's going to sell at Amazon and other online sellers for about $299.00. I'm sure their margin is higher on the movies so you are really paying more for the player at CC since you can still get the 5 Toshiba movies if you buy the player it anywhere else.
As to the desperation aspect I would say being desperate is when you give away a $3500.00 TV as opposed to 5 $20.00 movies."Wir hassen uns einander tapfer"

9 HDDVDs? are there even 9 of them worth bothering with? I wonder if you can switch out the HDDVD with just regular DVDs, thatd be a better deal

Personally, I think it's desperation on both sides. Regardless of who leads in disc sales, both have a budget to get their formats in the publics face. One hesitates, and the other will eat them alive. Both are losing alot of money here. I think in the end both will end up cutting off their nose to spite their own face.
