Default [Rumor] Circuit City offering Trade-in for HD DVD Players

I just found this on Gizmodo:

Quote:
Circuit City Trading In HD DVD for Blu-Ray Players, Says Employee

According to a Circuit City employee in Chicago, the consumer electronics chain is trading in HD DVD players bought into their stores "within 3 months of the announcement," as opposed to their 30-day return policy. According to the internal memo announcing the demise of the format, they will either give customers a Blu-ray player—paying the price difference, if any—or a gift card. The trade-in, however, will not be widely promoted and it will be only made available if the customer asks for it. Have any of you tried this? [Thanks Tony]
Well, it's coming from one who claims to be an employee, so take it with a grain of salt. And while this is perhaps a good deal, it does not fix the problem of all the HD DVDs one might already got, and then can't play anymore.

So, picking up the question of the article: Anyone trying to use it?

haha I remember that, I was actually still working there (at circuit city) when ther offered the $100 rebate for trading ing their DiVX/DVD player. The only difference is that it was Circuit City who was the MAIN and Primary backer of Divx-enabled DVD players, they were the masterminds, so ofcourse they felts more obligated to take care of their customers. HDDVD on the other hand, is not their problem...they just sold it at their stores like the hundreds of other retailers.

Why don't the HD HDVD players play anymore? Just wondering are they to stop working all at once or in phases?

I think if you ask the average blu-supporter they'll tell you that all HD DVD players magically stopped working the day warner announced that they were going to blu exclusive. I think that's why they've been annoying us all, telling us purples (and reds) that we're stupid for taking advantage of great HD DVD pricing at this point.

Think he's trying to say if you exchange your HD DVD player and have bought HD DVD movies, you would no longer be able to play them (unlesss you have a another player).

But I prefer the mission impossible / self destruct theory better.

I practically did this already. I bought the HD-A3 when they had that "Pricing Error" for $100.04. Two weeks later Toshiba throws in the towel so I went two days later and exchanged it for a PS3. I had about $150 in Circuit City gift cards so I paid about $180 out of pocket. I already had an HD-A2 and an Add-on so I really didn't need the third player. I see the catch is that it had to be purchased there so that already eliminates alot of people.

Doesn't this cost the retailer more to do? Cuz if anyone followed the news with Circuit City, you'ld know they have been in financial troubles for a long time, even considering closing shop due to high overheads and failed business tactics

I think it is good that Circuit City is offering extensions of their normal return policy. I wonder how many HD-DVD owners have tried the offer and if it is difficult?

c'mon guys, lets move past this. with all due respect to crazz, this isn't cute or witty when you see it for ther 32823489239th time. We get it - you disagree that your players are obsolete, ok fine whatever!

On another note, it would suck to see CC close their doors. I'm not sure I see that happening anytime soon.

Neither is the constant attacking of people who point out good deals on HD DVD, explain why they're keeping their "investments" and constant crowing about HD DVD players being obsolete... Guess what, VHS players are obsolete but they still function, and I know many people who have kept their players all these years and still enjoy watching movies on them that they refused to rebuy on DVD.

So tell you what, you want to stop reading these comments? Then stop making silly comments advising people not to take advantage of their HD DVD player investments by partaking in the media fire sales. At the end of the day it makes straight up blu supporters look nervous and insecure, like they really don't feel that bluray has what it takes to survie the battle with DVD so they need to attack anything that they see as a "threat" to BD world domination.

most people bought HD DVD players to play HD DVD movies, the general person, IE not on this site to argue how awesome pouring money into a format that wont be around, will want a BD player instead of HD DVD.

The only people using the "it doesnt stop working argument" just apparently dont understand how the incredibly large majority of consumer electronic purchasers think. When they buy an HD DVD they buy it fo rHD DVD's...when HD DVD dies, they dont want it anymore.....simple as that.

great mindset.

For early adopters, they will continue to use the players. so pretty much you are saying that you buy a player and say 50 - 100 movies and then bam, obsolete so they don't work. sell them. Maybe people with cars should think that way. I mean the Dodge SRT4 is not produced anymore...obsolete right....sell it......
Who cares if people want to keep them. they spent the money, let them decide. Xa2 is a phenomenal upconverter and the hd dvds work great. CC is being generous for early adoptees who buy a player and have like 5 movies...makes sense for them to return it.

True, if you have like 100 HD-DVD movies, you should probably keep it since those titles would justify the hardware investment.

The only argument against it would be that you would probably get the most trade-in value now versus say 5 years later. It is like if you have a LD player now for 100 LD movies. You will need to keep both the discs and player intact to enjoy the movies (assuming you didn't buy the DVD version of the movie).
