Default Sony To Open Blu Ray Flood Gates in 2008 - Plans 50% Increase In Titles

Found this just posted article on Video Business. Very interesting read.

Here's an excerpt.

"Sony’s (David Bishop) Bishop said the studio will be releasing its largest selection of BD titles yet in 2008. Sony plans to street slightly more than 100 titles during the year, marking a 54% increase from its 2007 output. From launch to date, the studio has released 93 total BD titles.

Slate highlights include such upcoming theatricals as The Other Boleyn Girl with Natalie Portman, Hancock with Will Smith and Don’t Mess With the Zohan with Adam Sandler.

“In some respects, the [format war] ended a bit quicker than anticipated,” Bishop said. “I didn’t think we’d be sitting here in February and see that it was completely over. The early indications for Blu-ray are really positive. … Consumers are going to want to see these movies in a way they’ve never seen them before, and we are going to continue to feed that.”

It's great to know that Sony is now going to release more movies on Blu-ray. I'm sure Disney and other studios will be doing the same.

The funny part of the story is Bishop implying that Toshiba's speed to destruction was much faster than even they anticipated which is seems why Paramount and Universal are quietly ramping up ahead of the planned demise of the format.

It all seems to fit together. Universal holding off on new titles, Paramount announcing titles only until April...Then Warner, thought to be the evil empire, ends up *supporting* HD DVD the longest. Oh what a world it is.

Hmmm

I am mostly anxious for Prom Night, it is looking to be the average teen horror flick, but I want this badly on Blu-ray already.

This is good news. Yet somehow, I have a feeling that this and the upcoming announcements from Paramount and Universal regarding their release schedule this year may not be fast enough for some bitter HD-DVD fans who think that BD should already be outselling everything in the market right now.

I'd appreciate a competent Shawshank Redemption transfer, my DVD version got chewed by a pet the last time it was borrowed.

What isn't out-selling DVD 10 to 1!?!?!? OMG its an epic failurez! That's just gonna be niche product now, DD are here and will obliterate LOL'z you suckers. IBM is gonna get up superfast optical connections soon! Physical media is dead! 720p is good enuf! My upconverts better than your player looks. was killed by the ebil $ony!

Sorry, was channeling a red fanboy there. the look and sound of fail

To$hiba really screwed over a lot of people by not just merging this up front. I hate format wars. The customers on the losing side are burned, bitter, and want the opposite side to fail no matter what afterwards.

I am with you on this one. Who cares about SONY's films...Lawrence of Arabia, Bridge on River Kwai, Indochine, the Viva Pedro Set, On The Waterfront...

It is SONY after all...right?

Ciao,

Add Ghostbusters, Men in Black, Desperado, Once upon a time in Mexico and that's all Sony has to do to please me. Sony has better classics like you've mentioned above than most studios. kwaii and Arabia are the best of the best. I always preferred them to the likes of gone with the wind.
