Default Microsoft discontinues 360 HD-DVD add-on

Took them long enough:

Quote:
Microsoft Xbox 360 HD DVD Player Officially Discontinued

It was only a matter of time before Microsoft officially discontinued manufacturing the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on, but it took them a few days longer than we expected. Their statement is finally out, and it signals Microsoft's official withdraw from HD DVD on the console front.

The good news is that they'll still continue to support and repair your player based on the standard warranty, but chances are you'll get little future use out of that player now that no movies will be made for it. What's still unclear is whether there will ever be a Blu-ray add-on to the 360 that's cheap enough to sell the Xbox + Blu-ray package at a comparable price to the PS3 ($399ish). We're guessing that something along these lines will hit within the year

It was coming. Resistance is futile.

I assume they will have a market with 360 owners for a BD drive, but I doubt it will amount to more than their HD DVD base. I guess 360 owners could take heart in the idea that their machine is a dual format player....with an extra investment of $400 (the price of a PS3), but it still can't pass lossless audio.

I'll bet Bill Gates is fuming at the prospect of having to dump HDi in favor of Sun Microsystem's BD-j.

Payback's a bitch Billy boy.

I highly doubt it. If it was *that* important his company could have been more aggressive in the format war. They'll either do the BD add on and try to make some money off that or just skip BD altogether and push digital delivery. Either way, I'm sure Mr. Gates will still be doing just fine

Read about this in the paper today, I had to double take because I thought it was strange they we're mentioning the format war now, then I saw the content.

If this hasn't already been posted. The HD DVD add-on for the XBOX 360 has now dropped to $49.99. I've checked pretty much all the stores and they have them listed at that price. The five free movie offer is only good till 2/28/08 (must have purchased before that date). Great deal for anyone wanting to buy a back-up drive (or get free movies) even though HD DVD is dead. I picked one up for the hell of it at Circuit City.

A $100 decrease in the 360 price, and a $149.95 price on the Blu-Ray add-on drive would be nice. Even better if the 360 became the 1st BD 2.0 player.

I just picked one up today from Best Buy. Needed a back up drive, with all the movies I have been buying recently. Besides, I still have a DVD player from 1998 that works, so I expect my HD DVD players to work for some time. If they break, well there are always the LG Combo Players or ebay.

Can't do 2.0 because the spec mandates 1GB storage. The Xbox 360 does not mandate a hard disk drive. Anyone using it with an Arcade 360 does not have the requirements for 2.0's spec. It is at best 1.0 I think.
