Default Amazon.com to Support Blu-ray as the Digital Format of Choice for Customers

Official press release:
Quote:
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In an effort to help demystify high-definition entertainment for consumers, Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) today announced its support for Blu-ray as the digital format of choice for customers. As part of this announcement, Amazon.com will more prominently promote Blu-ray hardware and software products on its website.

“The high-definition landscape is rapidly changing, and consumers are looking for guidance on how to make the best high-definition buying decisions,” said Peter Faricy, vice president of movies and music at Amazon.com. “Our customers have clearly voiced their support for the Blu-ray format. Blu-ray titles have increased from just over half of our high-definition sales to over three-quarters of our high-definition sales since early January. In order to best serve our customers, Amazon is recommending Blu-ray as the preferred digital format and will continue to carry the ‘Earth’s Largest Selection’ of Blu-ray products.”

Amazon.com currently carries a wide array of Blu-ray hardware and software products including players, Blu-ray discs, and the Sony PlayStation 3. For the hundreds of thousands of HD DVD owners who may still wish to purchase products for that format, Amazon will continue to carry a wide assortment of HD DVD products, including the broadest selection of HD DVD movie titles.

I think HD DVD will swept under the rug very quickly. Paramount better make a decision soon or they'll be left behind.

I guess it's better late than never, but Amazon didn't seem to want to push BD very much. I noticed they pushed HD DVD a lot, but they didn't quite push hard enough.

Maybe Paramount is still bound by it's contract or is having a hard time making a deal with the BDA. Basically the weclome mat is probably out for them, but no concesions or discounts plus maybe a hefty entry fee say $150mill.

Just taken a look at the Amazon.com website. They have posted a message about HD DVD and it's uncertainty. There's honesty for you. Nice one Amazon.

On the HIGH-DEF 101 page:

Toshiba Discontinues HD DVD Players
9:38 AM PST, February 19, 2008

Toshiba has just announced that it will discontinue its HD DVD players and recorders, and expects to be out of the HD DVD business by the end of March 2008. Future availability of HD DVD discs is unknown, although this news follows the Warner Bros. decision in January to stop producing HD DVDs as of May 31, 2008. HD DVD players will continue to play HD DVD discs and upconvert standard DVD discs

On the subject of HD disk drives, the company said it "plans to end volume production of HD DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. The company will continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives within the overall PC business relative to future market demand."

The company also noted that it plans to continue to "provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products."

Blu-ray is now the remaining high-definition disc format, and this change in the market means that those who've been waiting to jump into high def have a clear path to follow. Over the next few days, we'll be updating our High-Def 101 page with the latest information on the high definition player landscape. --The Amazon.com High-Def Team

Fantastic.. Supposing that they won't just 'throw away' their entire library of HD DVD movies, I suppose now they'll hopefully reduce the price and liquidate the stock.

FIRESALE! (here's hoping my library will increase considerably)
