Looks like there may be some truth to the PS3 "Slim" rumors floating arround. I can't see Sony dropping the price again though. Analysts everywhere are singing praises that PS3 will overtake X360 this year even at it's current price.

Would be nice to see a smaller quieter PS3. Better yet it would be nice to see a HT edition with IR.

Exactly. If the price of this chip has come down why not use it as the centerpiece of Blu standalone. Sony has already programmed it for dvd, up conversion, and hidef audio codecs(assuming we do see HD MA). Put a fully compliant 1.3 HDMI that can bitstream everything and you'll have a winner.

A very quiet fan? I could live with that!

Better yet, pass it on to Denon and really blow out the quality.

Sony is a business though and is going to do what ever turns a profit. Anyone out there upset that Sony would purposely do this has never owned stock before.

The question is will the profit from this new standalone + profit gained from blu ray disc sales (royalties Sony makes off each disc) be greater then what Sony is going to make by putting a gaming machine into the average non console gamers house? The Trojan horse works both ways in this business model not only did a game system sell blu ray but blu ray is going to sell there game system until the other CE's can put out equivalent products.

My guess is it's not a smart move for Sony to make a super blu ray player, it most likely won't increase adoption that drastically (overall) and may hurt there relationship with the other blu ray CE's like Toshiba did I mean those CE's are already competing with a system Sony's proven they'd take loses on to simply get into your home and when it's there yours kids may just well convince you to pick them up a game or two.

The difference is that the other Blu-ray manufacturers were and are still making a profit off their machines, even when matching the PS3's price points.

According to Onkyo, Toshiba didn't care for them, just the race to the bottom and selling them out to the Chinese. Of course, Toshiba screwed over the DVD manufacturers by doing the exact same thing to DVD, so Onkyo shouldn't have been surprised. After all, that's the reason 90% of the major manufacturers decided to start the BDA and announce Blu-ray months before HD DVD.
The emergence of a single, high-definition format is cause for consumers, as well as the entire entertainment industry, to celebrate.

Not that I don't think a new Playstation may come out that is capable of the better audio or bitstreaming heck I could see them putting in a duel tuner and increasing the size of the hard drive and allowing it to work as a DVR so it could be your replacement to your HTCP but I would be absolutely shocked if Sony created such a system that wasn't also capable of playing PS3 games as long as the function is in your home there is always a chance you're going to purchase some of the gaming media.

Obviously this isn't a great comparison but how many million PS2 consoles did Sony sell which is often referred to as one of the best selling consoles to date. But compare that number to how many total dvd players there are world wide. If Sony can even get a small fraction of the next gen media players to also have PS3 gaming ability that's market penetration of a new kind.

The next gen of these systems may be media centers where you have one device replacing a couple. Or we may only see media royalty holders doing it as they're the ones who truelly win, who knows just my thoughts on it.

The market takes care of itself. Obviously without HD-DVD, there will be no firesale deals, but all CE manufacturers must compete with each other for the consumer dollar. PS3 itself will see to it that prices within a certain range. With Wii and 360 out ahead, its not like Sony is going to be raising the price of PS3 .. an imminent price cut with the reduced form factor is more likely. That means all other standalones must at least be comparable, and even lower since PS3 is a beast itself.

If this kind of development really makes you smile with glee, then...your life must be a little on the empty side. Before anyone throws the "personal attack" clause on me, this is just a general observation.

Why should IBM reducing Cell form factor and thus reducing cost and raising efficiency not be a GOOD developement?

ummm spicy seriously WHAT THE FUCK?!

WHY is anything mentioned about CELL in the BLU-RAY HD DVD SMACKDOWN area!?

Because it's included in the PS3? Maybe we should talk about WIFI products, USB devices, card readers, keyboards, etc then??

I agree with this. It would still be nice though for Sony to work a bit more with partner companies to develop 2.0 players with the speed of PS3 as quickly as possible. I don't need a 2.0 player, I need a player that is FUTURE 2.0 compliant - and I want it to be fast.

I love the PS3 I have, but I would prefer a SAL. If this is the feeling of J6P (IF!) then Sony seems to have a lot of potential there to help make it happen. Like they let Pioneer develop their first BD player, it would be a great teaming opportunity to build relations, and to increase the overall bottom line.

I have no doubt that within 2 years my PS3 will be stricly a gaming console in my home while my Blu-ray player pulls double duty as a DVD player and Blu-ray player.

Sweet, a new PS3 that uses less energy and emits less heat. I only hope that they recreate a another PS3 with the Emotion Chip + the new smaller chip with full Backwards capability, as I really want to get rid of my 60GB but not for a less feature version.
    PS3 160GB, Xbox 360 S 4G w/250 GB, Sony KDL-46EX500, Sony HT-SS360 5.1, 250+ blurays

Same here, a more energy efficient PS3 with the EE would be sweet. They should bundle it with 100 gig hdd with a extra price of $50.

For real, drop cell based SA devices, they could even include Toshiba's fancy new upconversion capabilities and license it from toshiba for $1 a player or whatever.
