Why all the threads about HD DVD winning or blu losing?
I guess I'll start this off by saying that I have always been a red supporter, and personally still prefer the HD DVD experience to the Bluray experience though I have both. But lately it seems the rabbid HD DVD supporters have been starting a series of "defiant" (wishful thinking) threads with subjects like HD DVD continuing to dominate, or bluray losing, or generally suggesting that things are continuing to roll along as they should for HD DVD.
Can't we be realistic here? Yes, HD DVD is a great format. There is a whole bunch you can say positive for it. Heck, I've debated a lot of the strong points (and will probably continue to) on these forums many a time. But lets be realistic and accept these basic facts:
A): Things are *NOT* rolling along as planned for HD DVD.
B): At this point, there is a 99% probability that HD DVD can not win the war.
C): If HDM is going to become the defacto standard, it will be Bluray.
All this said, I wouldn't say that there isn't anything to debate. Personally I still frequent these forums, and still debate here because I feel there is a lot HD DVD side got so right that Blu side got so wrong, so I see it being worth debating these points in the hopes of helping some stanch blu supporters see the good in HD DVD and demand that the BDA take more affirmitive action in fully incorperating these features into their players. for instance, 100% profile 2.0 support across the board, good quality SA units, lower basic cost of entry, generally better quality SA's.Toshiba 55" 55HT1U LCD (1080p@24fps) w/Tivo HD, Harmony 880

Agreed. I guess without all the new threads that basically say the same thing over and over, there wouldn't be a need for a smackdown forum.

Well this cuts both ways, I am as sick of reading Blu-ray wins as I am about HD wins. Neither sides' threads tend to be oozing impermeable logic.

Yep, I agree.
would have to be around 90% of the amrket share in studios would have to be supporting the Blue-Ray format now.
New blu-ray players will be out in the next few months then probably the next upgraded ones by year end I would think too.
To me it would seem that toshiba is the only company making HD-DVD players and that would seem they are wanting a monoploy on the HDM player market.
People might say there's other HD-DVD player makers but still toshiba makes their drives for those companies. -

HD-DVD certainly did some things right and I do hope that the BDA will look at that and learn from them. You should always look at your competition, learn from their plus points and avoid their negatives.

My feelings exactly. HD DVD is a good enough format in many ways, and if it had the majority of studio support I would have been on it like pollen on a bee. However, reality turned out this way - and I am perfectly happy about it as I think Blu-ray has many things going for it that HD DVD does not.
I don't like to see misinformation by people with an agenda. Please don't confuse me with a format fanboy. However, I do enjoy the odd internet fight.

This is my take on some of our more "enthusiastic" HD-DVD supporters.

Hark! What is that I hear? A voice of reason amongst the gnashing and churning mobs of frenzy! That's a great post, crazzeto. A shame that the usual suspects (from both sides) will just skim over it with a twisted look of confusion on their faces, and then go about business as usual. Still, it's nice to at least try and cut through the fanaticism with the rapier of cerebral thought.

it's good to hear HD DVD supporters who are able to admit when the format is done.

People are going to believe they want. Some think it's game over, BD has already won. In fact some think BD won the day PS3 launched, etc. People have and will always position themselves as they see fit. Nice post but this is yet another 'getting on my soapbox' type thread.

Have you ever seen someone drown in a movie? Usually there's a lot of thrashing about before the body actually goes still.
Oh, and Blu got so much wrong? And still won? What's that say about the Hddvd group....errrrr, Toshiba.PS3 60G SLI PC DS

They can piss and moan all they want. A year from now HD DVD will be sitting right next to DIVX in the home video hall of shame.
The thing I find so amusing is the red supporters main reason for backing HD DVD is because they hate DRM....(something that wouldn't even matter if they had more studio support)yet say they will now switch digital downloading instead of Blu-ray.
It's all such a comedy of errors as HD DVD folds like a house of cards in a hurricane. -

There is a lot blu camp got very wrong, launching before they were ready is one biggie. Everything should be profile 2.0 and should have been since day one IMHO, this is something HD DVD camp got very right.
Another one is HD DVD camps focus on SA's rather than game consoles. In the end this is what you really need to push DHM to mainstream.
A third thing that HD DVD camp did right is to focus on pricing which is very important to J6P.
So I would love to see the BDA focus on these three area's going forward.Toshiba 55" 55HT1U LCD (1080p@24fps) w/Tivo HD, Harmony 880
