Best Buy and Circuit City SB ads Hmm...
These ads were placed on 1/27/2008 This is my first post so they wont let me print the full http so copy and paste these urls just put the https in front of them ok
Well some on both sides might find this very interesting. Best Buys Superbowl ad ONLY shows
movies for sale no
movies to be found. And its A BOGO sale. The Reds should be happy!
bestbuy.shoplocal.com/bestbuy/Default.aspx?action=browsepageflash&storeid=248049 1&rapid=507480&pagenumber=1&prvid=012708BA&promoti oncode=012708BA
On The other hand Circuit City's Superbowl ad ONLY shows
movies for sale no
movies to be found. And its a $5 off sale. The Blues should be happy!
circuitcity.shoplocal.com/circuitcity/Default.aspx?action=browsepageflash&storeid=239687 4&rapid=506241&pagenumber=1&prvid=CircuitCity-080127&promotioncode=CircuitCity-080127
A link here is tricky due to the fact that these ads may be region sensitive I went on the best buy and circuit city sites and clicked on the weekly ad section (asks for your zip) and wellah you will be able to check out their ads
(These ads are the insert ads they send out with local papers and have available in store, they are NOT T.V. spots)
PS3 = 25 Games + 19

I just flipped through the BB ad and did not see any mention of a
sale at all... Is the one you saw an extra insert possibly?... Both ads I've seen are from NY, but do they normally exclude them from a sale like this?...
Here is next weeks BB/CC ads for anyone interested...

OMG, I just checked the 28 page sales flyer for the Canadian retail outlet The Future Shop (owned by Best Buy), and there was not a single Blu-ray player to be found. Not on sale, not packaged with a television, nothing. There are 2 HD DVD players listed, the A3 and the A30.
However, all Blu-ray movies are on sale 2 for $50 almost like they are clearing out the stock. Hmmmmmm.
I remember last week when there was only HD DVD movies for sale everyone was saying how this was a sign that stores were clearing their stock of HD DVD tiltles and that the end of HD DVD was near. Well, turnabout is fair play. Now that Blu-ray movies are the only ones on sale it must surely be a sign that Blu-ray is on the way out.
I mean look at the evidence. No players listed and clearance prices (for Canada that is) on all Blu-ray titles. Ohhh, this is bad. Real bad. You guys should stock up before it's too late.

Weekly ads that are actually designed and printed weeks (if not more than a month) before going out are not a good indicator of future trends.

I agree people are jumping the gun a bit at times. But i'm not sure that it's altogether unfair. I mean, on the one hand you've got 83/85% ratios, on the other 15/17%. On the one hand you've got a string of pick ups of support, and announcements regarding hardware/software etc. On the other we've had a string of co's dropping support or going neutral (losing exclusivity) and no news of next hardware. On the one hand retail prices have stayed at supportable levels, on the other retail prices have needed to be cut in half to be competitive - with sales in some stores cutting the prices to near a third of their previous retail or offering large bundles.
Add to that HD DVD's biggest asset - it's willingness to cut profits on players - won't be there indefinitely (with all these sub$300-350 BD's within a couple/few months presuming the BDA doesn't do something even earlier), and it's not hard to see how people will presume the competitor seemingly on the ropes as 'desperate' when sales come around. There's a bit of guessing and hoping from some Bluray diehards, for sure, but it's not completely out of hand, or hypocritical, to be more suspicious of the motivations behind sales for the struggling format than the one nearer the finish line. -

Well, it was blu supporters who were basing their "sky is falling on HD DVD" warnings on such flimsy evidence as retail blowout sales that prompted me to insure my investment. I just wanted to return the favor.

BTW, I have a Blu-ray player as part of my Media Center PC and a couple of movies. With this new evidence, I might just have to go out and but a few more players and a couple of hundred movies, just to be safe.

These ads are for this Sunday, hmmm...what do you think people will be doing Sunday? Shopping? Probably not...most will be attending Superbowl parties. Whoever bought a new TV for the Superbowl did so last weekend or during this week (i.e. before this Sunday).
Toshiba missed the boat once again, because last weekends ads still had the old prices for their players. Thus, peope buying new TVs may not have been aware of the price drops unless told by the respective store employees.
The only thing they can hope for is people see their commercial and then look in the ads to see the $149 A30s and such.
But, alas, imo, too little, too late. -

the retail clearance incidents may have been flimsy, but in the past week there have been at least three companies that have either dropped support or started supporting bluray, let alone all of the past companies jumping on bluray. zombieflanders and some others have a whole list going of the things that have occurred after WB. I wouldn't get too confident over some BB and CC ads when the industry appears to be turning its back on
at a frequent pace.

Potential bad news (for both formats this time)
"Consumers Not Splurging on HDTVs for the Super Bowl -
For sports fanatics, having a high-definition television for the Super Bowl isn't a luxury anymore; it's a necessity. That's why cable companies and retail outlets alike offer discounts and other incentives on HDTVs and HD cable packages in the weeks leading up to the big game. However, recent data suggest that pre-Super Bowl TV purchases may actually be decreasing, thanks to a leveling-off of HDTV prices and a looming recession.
"What is happening more and more is that people are buying their Super Bowl TVs back in December because the prices are so good around the holidays," said Forrester Research's James McQuivey, "so the Super Bowl spike is probably decreasing in significance."
Decreasing, but not disappearing. The National Retail Federation estimates that last January, 2.5 million Americans purchased HDTVs specifically for the Super Bowl. And Forrester's consumer survey data suggest "that Super Bowl TV buying is about 20 percent of the size of the holiday buying period," McQuivey said."

Seems like the holidays were more of a hot time to buy this year - and here comes my blu spin...and we all know what happened during the holidays, right? Nothing but good for blu. If people already blu(?) their load during the holidays how many are going to pick up HD players of either format (unless they already have them)?
