Default Gartner Research: Blu-ray Wins In 2008

Gartner: Blu-ray Wins In 2008
The research group says HD DVD's new price cuts may just prolong the battle.
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (January 28, 2008) -- Blu-ray this year will win the high-def disc format war against HD DVD, says a new report from Gartner Research.

Toshiba recently slashed prices on HD DVD players, but Gartner says that will likely prove to be "useless resistance" in the battle.

However, Gartner does say the price cuts could prolong the battle for several months. Toshiba's entry-level HD DVD player is now just $127 at Amazon.com.

Warner Bros. this month announced that it's endorsing Blu-ray over HD DVD, giving the format a 5-2 'major studio' advantage.

Since then, many analysts have speculated that Blu-ray will ultimately emerge as the winner in the high-def disc war. In a new report released today, Gartner echoed that sentiment.

"Gartner believes that Toshiba's price-cutting may prolong HD DVD's life a little, but the limited line-up of film titles will inflict fatal damage on the format. Gartner expects that, by the end of 2008, Blu-ray will be the winning format in the consumer market, and the war will be over," the report said.

Despite the skeptics, Toshiba is planning to run a 30-second commercial for HD DVD during Sunday's Super Bowl contest between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots.

Nothing earth-shattering here, but just adds fuel to the fire.

At this point, all they're doing is stating the obvious. Red bots are the only ones in denial of this fact.

And to think that all it took was Warner Sisters dumping HD-DVD. Both WB and Paramount were neutral last year. Both camps split them one each, and that signals the end of HD-DVD? That just shows the disparity in value between the two studios. We all know Warner is a bigger studio than Paramount, but I didn't think the difference was THAT big.

I wonder how the picture would be if HD bought Warner in August 07 instead, and it was Paramount who joined blu in Jan 08? Would the fat lady still start clearing her throat for HD-DVD? Will it be stalemate? Or would Red be poised to win?

If Toshiba is going to advertise, a more appropriate place to do it would be in cinemas before each movie. But right now, a superbowl ad is too little, too late.

This is my Personal Favorite so far As if it takes a rocket scientist to come up with the same conclusion...only delusional HDDVD supporters would think that even a $50 HDDVD player would save this dead format.

In Other news, FormatWarCentral.com has confirmed that Circuit City HAS INDEED PUT ALL HDDVD PLAYERS ON CLEARANCE, ALL 3 of THEM!

GOOD BYE HDDVD

Yeah, not much else the mainstream media is reporting these days. Makes me wonder why there are still anymore of you non-believers still here.

What will it take for you guys to accept the obvious?

They are that big, but even more importantly, is the studio balance, which was in Blu's favor even after Paramount left them.

The Paramount defection still left Blu-ray with 4 supporting major studios. Warner leaving HD DVD left them with only 2.

Great post!

That reminded me of Pacino in Glengarry Glen Ross: 'Patel? F*** you. F***in' Shiva handed him a million dollars, told him "sign the deal," he wouldn't sign.'

I agree that its too little too late but I have to admire them for spending their money wisely this time. There is a very large number of people that just bought a nice shinny new HDTV to watch the superbowl with. Toshiba are no doubt hoping that these people are completely ignorant of the Warner news and hope they can trick them into buying into a dead format. It will atleast help clear some of their old stock before they drop HD-DVD completely.

However, The BDA decided to give their players away with those HDTV's which was a much, much better use of their advertising budget.

I do think its a little iresponsible of the network to accept advertisements for a dead format in such a high profile event though.

Gartner has always been a Blu-Ray shill. It is hard to find a research company which has less respect than Gartner- They probably just contacted Bill Hunt for their "research".

Forester is preparing a report right now which says that due to J6P overwhelming desire for PiP and WebFunctionality and cheapass prices that HD-DVD will regain at least two studios by April.

And I heard Sony/MGM/Columbia would be one of them...

Hopefully it's just Lionsgate and NatGeo.
