Default BBC Stays Purple

Just posted:

Warner's switch to Blu-ray exclusivity will not sway its distribution partner BBC Home Video from its dual-format stance.

That's word from from a company spokesperson, who late yesterday told TVShowsonDVD.com that the BBC will continue its format-agnostic strategy for the time being, and that they "will evaluate the marketplace before committing to one format."

The company cited the stellar sales of its 'Planet Earth' box set (whose HD DVD version has outsold the Blu-ray) as added reasoning behind the decision, as well as an upcoming line-up of multiple (but as yet unannounced) high-def titles it has planned for both formats in 2008.

The BBC's decision to stay put come in the wake of moves made last week by Warner subsidiaries New Line and HBO to shift to Blu-ray exclusivity. The BBC is now the only Warner-distributed company to remain format neutral.

I guess it makes sense (no real surprise here). No complaints from me as they'll continue to release on Blu. I think it's only a matter of time, though.

Hmmm, it does not sound like it will stay that way for long

Awesome. I love all my BBC docs. I'm glad I'll still be able to watch them on my prefered format.

Actually, it is somewhat surprising to me. I figured that with Warner switching, all Warner's sister companies and distribution partners would follow suit.

However, it's not an unwelcome surprise (for me). I like having access to both formats.

If we take them at their word, it sounds to me like they'll remain format-agnostic until their Blu-ray titles start significantly outselling their HD DVD titles, perhaps if their HD DVD's really aren't selling well at all.

But for the time being, their HD DVD's (at least particularly Planet Earth) are outselling the Blu-ray counterparts.

Makes sense, they have sold more hd dvd's than blu rays. Why not continue selling to them.

for the time being
who knows what will happen tomorrow as being just about the only title to sell more than it's BD counterpart

It wasn't surprising to me based on these threads:
BBC slam Blu Ray
BBC remains neutral "HD DVD sales are much better"

A little suprising, but they will be going Blu exclusive by the end of May just like Warner.

Why? If sales indicate anything, yeah... it's damn good.

Where do you get this from just out of sheer curiosity?
