You guys laugh at Toshiba's statement, but one of my friends was extremely happy that he could use his A3 to upconvert his current DVD collection without having to replace his entire library.
You need to realize that not everyone is hanging out on sites like HDD and AVS and/or are tech freaks. Hell, there are even people nowadays that can't differentiate full screen and widescreen movies.
So given the popularity of upconvert DVD players, the new price point and the ability to play HD DVD is a smart marketing shift, of course, all that because of the recent Warner decision.Sony 60" LCD KDF-E60A20

I don't know if it's possible, but it could be interesting to compare the bicubic filter to the S-Spline XL filter in PhotoZoom Pro 2 with your screenshots.

How much do you want to bet that Sony will counter Toshiba's advertising saying the exact same thing?
Sony BDP-S1, Toshiba A3, Xbox HD DVD Addon. Samsung 1600, Insignia BR W/Netflix!

That is the only way they can sell their HD-DVD player. As a super duper SD upconverting player, heck... it cost cheaper then some of them.
This won't help them sell more HD-DVD media however... but who needs that?
I am officially BLU.

Toshiba is pathetic. Upconverting has been around for a while now, but they're trying to capitalize on the ignorance of customers not knowing this.
BDA needs to step it up now, it really won't take that much more to just kill HD DVD off. KILL IT OFF once and for all!

Here we hear it again... what's good enough. Now it's "upconversion is good enough." "Downloads are good enough." "2 studios are good enough." HD DVD, where all compromises are good enough. If all those compromises are good enough, why not support Blu-ray? It's got to be at least "good enough."
Toshiba is out to serve themselves with no concern for the market. It's a dumb slash and burn strategy. Sad for them and the mind numb followers.
