Default PS3 sales Surge

IGN.COM is reporting that since the introduction of the new 40gb PS3 model sales have tripled for the PS3. Estimates put is at 56,000 units sold, even beating out Nintedo's Wii system (beleive it or not). Great news for Sony and Blu-Ray!

Apparently they've doubled in North America as well.

I mean no wonder the ratios weren't that affected as of yet, along with Blu-Ray stand alones, with the 20% ratio Blu-Ray sold 40k players in those 2 weeks.

Normal trends see sales spike even more from Black Friday to Christmas. Expect those trends to get even better through the holidays. Forget keeping pace.

It's just the stragglers who were waiting for this price point to jump in...there isn't an endless supply of said people. Many have awakened from their Sony stupor. And ridiculously high oil prices *will* put an end to any Blu Christmas. The economics are simply not conducive to the highest priced console and hi-def format on the market.

I wonder if it's really the cheaper price or if it's just that time of the year. Let's hope sales numbers stay high from here on out all the way until the big exclusive system sellers hit mid next year. (GT5, MGS4)

I'm sure it's the price. Sales don't usually spike like this until Black Friday and on...so it's clearly having an effect.

And the guy saying this will be short liived...well, we're walking into the holiday. Granted, the PS3 ain't going to be anything but third this year amongst consoles...but matching the numbers 360 sold last year during this time period (just shy of 2 million) looks more than reasonable now.

Well timing the 40 gig launch along with DW6 was very very smart. I think that the sales for the PS3 (and DW6) will be very similar next week considering DW6 and the 40 gig were only out for one day. By Dec 1st, Wii Fit will rule all.

Uh... the PS3 is right in the middle of the price wars now between the 360 being at 400 {same as the 40 gig} and 450 {Elite} and the 500 Ps3 80 gig.

I'm confident that news of DIVX playback on PS3s will sell a few systems too.

Eh, I don't see it, only as a way to get PS3 owners to use their...um PS3s.

This is definitely encouraging.

It seems unlikely to be an amazing bluray standalone jump, but if the ps3's even with attach rates can match that of the HDDVD standalone sales increases then that will be excellent.

GREAT sales for the PS3 of more than 100k units per week in USA and more than 50k units per vweek in Japan!

Now, the question is how many of those people will BUY or RENT blu-ray movies....
