Yup, you hit the nail on the head.
Well, Toshiba and MS vs. the World.

TOKYO — June 27, 2005 — Microsoft Corp. and Toshiba Corp. today announced a significant expansion of the companies’ global relationship to enhance the development and delivery of innovative digital consumer electronics products and personal computers by sharing each other’s respective hardware and software technologies. The expanded collaboration is designed to accelerate the availability of new devices for the benefit of customers, while demonstrating mutual respect for each company’s intellectual property rights.
“Microsoft values our strong relationship with Toshiba, a company we admire for its long-standing commitment to innovation,” said Bill Gates, chairman and chief software architect of Microsoft. “This agreement demonstrates our desire to share our innovations with other companies in ways that promote the spread of new ideas — and benefit customers by accelerating the development of exciting new products.”
The two companies have agreed to investigate development of HD DVD players using Microsoft® Windows® CE technology, by bringing together Microsoft’s expertise in software and PC technologies with Toshiba’s expertise in consumer electronics and computing. The companies also plan to strengthen their collaboration on iHD, the DVD Forum’s latest interactivity format.
As leaders in the PC industry, Microsoft and Toshiba promote joint ongoing projects in an effort to deliver breakthrough mobile PCs and expand the mobile market, showcasing integration of the key software features of the Windows operating system with the cutting-edge hardware technologies from Toshiba. The companies have been working closely to promote Windows XP-based Tablet PCs and Media Center PCs on a worldwide basis, offering customers new PC work styles and benefits. Microsoft and Toshiba also expect to develop and deliver compelling mobile PCs with the next version of the Windows operating system, code-named “Longhorn.”
In April 2005 the companies signed a cross-licensing agreement to promote the exchange of innovations developed by each company. The licensing agreement covers developments in computer and digital consumer electronics areas. Microsoft and Toshiba both have traditions of investing heavily in research and development, a fact reflected in the depth of their respective patent portfolios and diverse products.

Yet Toshiba is curretly kicking the BDA's ass as far as standalone sales go. Meanwhile, all the Blu manufacturers just leads to more confusion with respect to profiles:

I owned 2 Beta VCRs. I still have one. It's made by Toshiba...
and it no longer works.
(For the record, I also own 2 Sony minidisc players and 4 cellphones that take memory stick pro duo media. In my view, minidisc was not a failed format.).DVD: over 2150. BD: About 750. HD DVD: 80ish.
PS3 Slim (region B), XBox360 with add-on (X2) , Sony BDP-760 (Region B), Sony BDP-350 (Region B), Sony BDP-350 (Region A), Panasonic DMP-BD35 (Multiregion), Limit BDP-M100 (Multiregion), Panasonic DMP-BD-110 (Multiregion).
Currently surviving the credit crunch in the UK. -

"You will remember that we reported that the Duo will only get to the 1.1 profile with a free firmware update scheduled for late January. Ironically, because the Duo has an Ethernet port mandated by its HD DVD half, it will be able to get the update via network, without any fancy download-and-burn requirement."
classicI live in East Toronto and am married to a beautiful woman who runs a yoga studio. We have two wonderful kids, boy and girl, two cats and a mortgage that is almost paid off.
I have an HD-A20 and a PS3 but leaned red because the extras did count. Bye Bye HD, you gave it your best, that's all we could ask. Sony, finish your damn product already!
The Numbers: 900+ DVDs (rapidly declining), 34 HD-DVDs (+1 on order, + 5 free), 17 BDs (+2 on order). Last movie: Close Encounters. -

In reality the BDA is nothing more than a house of cards. It can collapse at any moment. The only companies with a vested interest in it are Sony and Matsushita. The fact that over 90% of BD players being used are PS3s just goes to prove that Blu is ultimately Sony's format to win or more likely lose.

Sony has more of a direct impact on this than Microsoft does. If Microsoft was manufacturing the players, and it somehow relied completely on Microsoft's operating system, I would never have bought HD DVD. Windows is loaded with DRM, and in some cases, there's DRM that not even Microsoft would stand for such as Sony's little rootkit scheme. Both of those companies have a bad history of screwing consumers, but as I said Sony is far more involved with Blu-ray's DRM than Microsoft is with HD DVD's. When it comes to fair use, I don't trust Sony at all. I think if Blu-ray wins, they will change the DRM on every single disc to the point that you need a new firmware update with each disc you buy, which is ridiculous.
Also, I'm pretty damn sure Disney and Fox aren't on Blu-ray's side out of the kindness of their hearts. It would be naive to think that there's not bribing going on from BOTH SIDES. -
