Default Total standalone HD DVD players after $99 weekend: 420,000

From Home Media Magazine

Quote:
Industry sources say that in the three days after Wal-Mart lowered the price of the second-generation HD-A2 player to less than $100, the big discount chain sold 60,000 units. Other chains that matched the price, both in stores and online, brought the total sold to nearly 100,000 units. Add that to the estimated 320,000 dedicated HD DVD players already in homes, and total household penetration is at about 420,000 units — a number format backers expect will exceed 500,000 units by the end of this month.

Back in January, Toshiba said they expected to ship 1.8 million players in North America (link). In June, they lowered their projections to 1 million.

So now they find themselves in November, after an extreme and widespread sale, at less than half their EOY target. Good or bad?

a) It's not official, so the numbers could be wrong or "a bit rounded"
b) If it were true it's still 7 weeks to the end of the year

but nevertheless you still have some valid points...Was it End of 2007 or the end of their financial year (whenever that is for Toshiba)?

Nice analysis. I forgot that Toshiba did lower their projections in June. I guess... when you look at the whole picture...its a bit of both, dont you think??

The estimate was by Toshiba, not the HD DVD PRG.

It applied to Toshiba players.

The add-on is not a Toshiba product.

Hence, it doesn't count for the fulfilment of the estimate.

The estimate of the HD DVD PRG for total players (including all brands, laptops and the Xbox add-on) was 2.5 milliion by the end of 2007: http://www.thelookandsoundofperfect....d_ces_2007.pdf

Noted.

It still does look better for HD DVD than it did a few months back, another A2 sale, if they actually have any left and they should top 1m players(including the 360 add on)

I think another big Wal-Mart sale on Black Friday is a given. That would put them above half a million. Then another 100K in December are pretty doable. That's 620K, total standalones by the end of the year.

As to add-on sales, barring any good offers such as the Heroes bundle at Best Buy, they are pretty much dead in the water. With luck, they'll sell 50K-70K more. Total add-ons under 300K.

A conservative estimate but I can somewhat agree to it

Do you have a link for that? I was under the impression that the addon is above 300K already...

I dunno, has the competition sold 90k stand-alone players in a three day span?

"dead in the water" heh interesting way of describing a player that's already outsold all BD stand-alones to date.

First off, the add-on is not a player. It's a console accessory.

Who would buy a console accessory if you can buy a proper player for nearly the same price?
