Thumbs up Sony to drop price of standalone MSRP to less than $400

Looks like Toshiba's prices will start the clearance of 1.0 players (which was going to happen anyway due to 1.1 coming in) beginning with Sony, likely the BDP-S300.

Stan Glasgow anticipates a $100 price drop at least:

Quote:
Sony Corp.’s Blu-ray DVD player will drop 20 percent or more in price this holiday season, the head of the company’s consumer electronics division said.
The price for the high-definition movie player, which produces sharper images than traditional DVD machines, will decline to less than $400 from $499.99 now, Stan Glasgow, president of Sony Electronics, said Thursday. The Sony player and HD DVD, backed by Toshiba Corp., are vying to be the new home-entertainment standard.
If it's $399 with Amazon's were to offer 12% off, which they currently do on the $499 MSRP, that would offer it for $349.99

I'm sure Samsung will beat that with the BD-P1400 and so too will Sharp with their first generation model in the weeks ahead.

wow, thats really not cheap at all. Nice try sony, nice try.

You should think to yourself before starting this thread..."if I have to make up some number that amazon.com will take off the already 20% off, to even make it look remotely good, well then I shouldn't post this".

It's coming. I think we will see $299-350 BD players this holiday season. I think they will sell well at that price. I don't expect to see anything close to $99-199 though.

Will those 1.0 models be able to run the 2.0 features eventually?

So people can pay $300+ for players that are out of date?

In all fairness the MSRP of the HD-A2 is still $299, so if Sony drops their player to $399 we could end up seeing a Blu-ray player selling at $199 for the Christmas season... Unlikely, but still a possibility...

You guys have to remember that when Toshiba was selling the A2 for $249 or less most BD players were being sold at $600-999 in B&M stores, yet Blu-Ray kept standalone sales pretty close. Now we are most likely comparing $199 versus $350 at most B&M stores. That is not that far apart in price for most people that are willing to buy into HDM.

I don't think the hardware allows it, if I am not mistaken.

"if amazon drops the price 12% and walmart drops it 20% more, and best buy price matches plus 10%, then we can get one for really really cheap" Nice.
