Sony had 2.6 billion dollars worth of PS3's sitting in a warehouse not moving when they fired crazy Ken.

That's alot of PS3's. I'm sure those are still being sold almost a year later. Who know's how long it's going to take to get rid of those.

Bad comparison. The PS3 has already sold over 5 million (WW) compared to all HD DVD players of at a guestimate 300k +/-. The A2 is not the only HD player, and it was planned to be superceded by A3. So for the A2 the stocking volumes we are talking about are a fraction of PS3.

Stocking half a million more players than you could sell when you know the player will be superceded long before selling that much would be a pretty daft idea. The only way I see that could happen is if they completely overestimated how many A2s they were going to have sold by the time A3 hit shelves.

Correct. Toshiba confirmed as much back in June of this year.

Toshiba Cuts HD DVD Forecasts

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 6/12/2007 11:50:00 AM
Tokyo — A high-ranking Toshiba executive revealed to reporters here that disappointing sales in the United States have reduced the company’s sales projections for HD DVD players and recorders, according to a Reuters’ report.

Yoshihide Fujii, head of Toshiba's digital consumer business, said Toshiba’s electronics group now expects to sell 1 million HD DVD players in North America by the end of calendar 2007, down 44 percent from its previous estimate of 1.8 million unit sales, Reuters reported.

So it was half a million PS3's in a warehouse not moving or sold. So the half a million PS3's equaled the 2.6 billion PS3's in inventory not sold back the 1st of the year?

Can that half a million number be right if the article listed the PS3 inventory built but not sold as 2.6 billion?

The 60 GB PS3 I bought 2 weeks ago was made in March.

Hell will need to freeze over before I consider buying a stand alone HD DVD player. The closest I will come would be a combo player if HD DVD still survives.

Sorry, you've lost me. Which article? Where are you getting 2.6 billion in inventory on the 1st of the year from?

As I recall it they struggled to ship even half a million in November plus had to delay European launch until end of March, so I don't see how they could've had 5 million PS3s sitting around on January 1st.

That's not to say that they don't have a billion$ $ worth of Cell chips and a billiion of RSX and whatever other parts they stockpiled. My point was, PS3 was forecasted to sell millions so its normal to stockpile millions.

Toshiba forecasted 1 million HD DVD players sold by end of FY2008, split between A2, A20, XA2, A3, A30.

They absolutely would. And yeah you're right, the 60GB are still being sold and when my friend got his in September from Amazon.com for $499, it was from a few months. I would check my HD player but between the audio receiver on top of it and the tight cables, it would be such a hassle to check lol

Let's not talk about inventory not moving. The Sam's Club by my home as of tonight still have a half a dozen 20 gig PS3's still trying to be sold. I go there from time to time hoping they will have a fire sale on them. I checked tonight since the 40 gig came out at the price point of $399...still wasn't happening. $450 with an extra controller was the price.

Yeah... Sam's Club or Costco sucks with regards to lowering prices. I saw 60GB PS3 with extra controler and a game for like $650 CDN.

However a big difference, Sony didn't do crazy firesale. They want to maintain some value for people who purchased them at higher prices. By differentiating each model (BC levels, HD capacity, etc.), they did that so people don't feel that bad when prices go down.

Funny, on AVS, someone has a HD-A2 manufactured in October 2007 in Japan. Wouldn't they have stopped manufacturing them by now? I mean the new HD-A3's came out in the beginning of October. Sounds like those might be part of the players manufactured exclusively for Wal-mart.

I don't know how much I would believe it because I don't usually associate cheap electronics being manufactured exclusively for Walmart coming out of JAPAN.

Well, I asked for the 2 people on AVS who posted that date to post pictures, if they do, then what?
