Default Blu-ray outsells HD-DVD in U.S. for first 9 months

Quote:
Since both formats launched in the spring of 2006, an estimated 4.98 million high-definition discs have been sold, including 3.01 million in Blu-ray and 1.97 million in HD-DVD through the end of September, according to Home Media.

Adams predicts that for 2007 overall, consumers will spend $186 million purchasing Blu-ray discs, versus $91 million for HD-DVD.

That's not much of a prediction...he's basically saying that Blu-ray will outsell HD-DVD by 2:1...just like it is doing...he's really going out on a limb, isn't he?

The entire sales of Blu-ray will be 186 million, that's why the 150 million made perfect sense for Paramount.

Seems logical to me. Take the money, wait 18 months for the market to mature and then go neutral or BD if it has become a clear winner.

True! Are there even any major HD DVD releases for the rest of the year?

Don't forget the Die Hard series on BD.

Blu-ray totaled 2.6 million units from January 1 through Sept 30, versus 1.4 million HD-DVD discs sold.
Wow, these numbers are impressive. Sony has over 2.2M Blu-ray capable devices on the market and HD just a few hundred thousand and the numbers are this high? I am impressed that despite Sony's buying out retailers, HD DVD is doing so well. It's very clear HD DVD is a viable contender and competitor for Sony and BDA.

Sony paid for an end-cap at Target.... What retailers did they buy out?

Sony paid a "jaw-dropping" sum along with three other studios, probably Disney since they are being featured alongside Sony releases at Target. Target does not want to comment on why they went BD only, including the issuance of a vageuly worded press releases, it's obviously not sales since they never carried either HDM previously.

Hastings (retail chain) is being subsidized by Sony to have them stock Blu-ray. It comes as a surprise, because some here like to pretend only HD is cutting checks. Do I really care? Not really because I know both sides are doing promotional deals and incentives.

I've been saying this since day one. Yet every BD zealot ignores it or spins it. With 6 million PS3s sold and almost as many stand alones as HD DVD all they can muster is double what HD DVD has sold?

Its pathetic, and as I've also said before, Sony and the BD group should have utterly crushed HD DVD...

Remember, though. These are the same people who think 2:1 with small numbers like 2 million vs 1 million means HD DVD is dead, but the PS3 being outsold roughly 3 to 1 (4:1 by some sources) in the multiple millions by both the Wii and 360 means nothing and in 2 years the PS3 will catch up and win the console war.

Double Standards, baby!

Great points, and good comparison note on the gaming world.

The PS3 is not solely used as a Blu-ray movie player. It's hard to count it as a stand-alone unit then it comes to movie sales.

You can't apply todays number of players to the aggregated number of sold movies. The advantage of more Blu-ray players (including the PS3) from LG, Samsung, Pioneer, Panasonic, Philips, Sony and others did not exist in the first half year from the release of HD-DVD. HD-DVD had a had start which they lost around new year. Blu-ray stand-alones have just recently started to sell more than HD-DVD making the stand-alone numbers for this year about the same but HD-DVD still has an advantage here in total numbers.

Wonder how things will change then Blu-ray have out-sold HD-DVD even if HD-DVD had ALL the HighDef players for the first months from it's release and Blu-ray now also wins the stand-alone sales?
