Default Transformers sets record: 190K in first week

HOLLYWOOD--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The blockbuster hit from DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures, TRANSFORMERS, is the year’s top-selling week one DVD with North American sales reaching 8.3 million units since the title’s debut on October 16, it was announced today by Paramount Home Entertainment. The biggest original film of the year from director Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg, in association with Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE:HAS), is also the best-selling DVD day one for the year with over 4.5 million units sold on Tuesday. Additionally, the smash hit has exploded into the high definition market, selling over 100,000 HD DVDs its first day of release, rocketing past previous releases to become the best-selling day one high definition title on either format since their inceptions. TRANSFORMERS has sold over 190,000 HD DVDs in its first week making it the fastest and best-selling week one release on either high definition format as well as the best selling HD DVD ever. The TRANSFORMERS DVD is also the top-selling October DVD release in the history of the home entertainment industry.

Wow.

If Paramount had remained neutral they would have sold over 500,000 in one week! (LOL... I had to! Someone has to say it!)

Those are very impressive numbers, that either means we are underestimating the number of HD DVD players out or Transformers sold to almost 50% of owners in the first week.

I wonder how many of those discs went with an A2 player at the same time...

I'm sure lots of people thought the same thing.

It'll be interesting to see how Spidey 3 stacks up. If TF can do 190k in one week...should be interesting to see where Spidey 3 goes.

I had my doubts it would break 100,000... nearly 200,000 copies is amazing.

So, does this conquer the myth that the majority of HD DVD supporters don't like blockbusters and are high-minded "movie lovers"?

Or does this simply confirm that people like day and date blockbuster releases with lots of eye an ear candy, when it come to hi-def - and that's what sells?

Glad we cleared that up.

I wonder how much of the sales were Wal-Mart as well. It may not be 190K in the Nielsens, but we do know the BOGOF blu-rays will show up there. This will be the largest week for high def media so far including the week 300 was released.

Wow. I thought 120K+ copies was realistic but 200K is amazing. Great news for HD DVD and good news for hidef. With this news, I suspect HD DVD will easily win the week @ Nielsen Videoscan.
