Default Toshiba only leads in stand-alone player sales with 53%!!

Toshiba admits that Blu-ray players outsold them earlier this year for "many weeks" and currently they only have a 53% market share based on latest NDP numbers.

Since all I hear is how much cheaper these players are how come they only sell slightly more of these than the "much more expensive" Blu-ray "standalone" players? When you factor in a percentage of PS3 sales as players on top of this it isn't much wonder so many more Blu-ray movies get sold.

Here's a concept, Brand recognition and loyalty. When consumers go to buy an HD player there more likely to buy a Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Phillips, etc. than are to buy a Toshiba. I Like their notebooks though.

WHAT? Toshiba has always made the best DVD players and make great electronics in general! Half the reason I bought a HD DVD player was because I knew it would be made well by Toshiba! Don't equate Toshiba with Goldstar or Visio or some crap, they're a HIGHLY respected CE company!

One more price drop by Blu-Ray CE's and I think you will see Blu-Ray take a decent lead in standalone player sales. This just goes to show you that price is just not the only driver in the format war, and Toshiba has not really accomplished much by continuously slashing player prices.

Did you actualy read the article.? Jodi Saly actualy said this ;

She acknowledged several Blu-ray weekly victories in the run-up to home theater installer conference CEDIA, but she told attendees at Tuesday’s DVD Forum conference, that Blu-ray victory was short lived. At the time of CEDIA in early September, Sony executives said that the launch of the company’s $499 models, which marked the cheapest available BD set-tops to date, helped boost their August sales.

The split is back to 53% to 44% with the new Toshiba players just hitting the shops. When are you BR girls going to accept that the war is over. There isn't going to be a winner?

I didn't mean to equate them to that. They make fine products. I'm just saying that people that have experience (good mind you) with the other brands are more likely to continue to buy the other brands. Toshiba being the major producer of HD-DVD standalones does not help much I believe. Other CE manufactures will need to jump in. Otherwise, pretty impressive what one company can do against other CE's.

53:44 is not a big lead considering that

A. Many people bought a PS3 instead of a standalone purely for movie playback, Example: Rob.D.
B. BD standalones are $100-$200 more expensive than HD DVD standalones

This coupled with the alleged need to *upgrade doesn't sound too good for the red camp.

Of course being purple, this doesn't matter too much to me

“When new models hit stores there will be a surge in demand. There were some weeks where we lagged,” said Sally. “But overall HD DVD continues to dominate.”
Quick someone ask her what verb(s) she would use to describe ~2:1 sw sales.

But the following gets my vote for most idiotic bs spin in the article....

Toshiba believes more people are buying PC HD DVD drives with the pure intention to watch high-def movies than people who are buying the PS3.

I don't know about winners, but if a CE company, after undercutting the competition by 50 percent and including/giving away five/seven/nine free movies, only manages to get 20 percent more sales than the competition, I call that a losing strategy.

Do you really think that HD DVD players will always cost $150-200 cheaper than Blu-Ray players? What do you think will happen when Blu-Ray players cost between $50-100 more than HD DVD players? And you also have to take in account the PS3 which a lot of folks (including myself) use as their primary Blu-Ray player.

I agree it's nothing to crow about but I don't belive the Paramount effect has worked through yet.
