This is an AWESOME deal and if this kind of price continues to appear in Canada and sales go very well, plus all the other issues continue to plague Blu Ray (BD Java incompatibility of all current SA BD players and uncertainty of BD+ compatibility, BD50 delayed titles etc.) I expect Warner will be forced to strongly act in a fiscally responsible manner with the future in mind and that they may indeed go HD DVD exclusive by CES show in January 2008.

You should put this kind of posts in the HD DVD Bargain section not in the Smackdown. You should have titled it:
$199 HD DVD PLAYER HAS FINALLY ARRIVED.

BTW, MidnightWatcher already posted it there.

Sold out in East Toronto and Markham and online.

It would have made a good gift for my da who cannot borrow any of my newer, non-combo, movies.
I live in East Toronto and am married to a beautiful woman who runs a yoga studio. We have two wonderful kids, boy and girl, two cats and a mortgage that is almost paid off.

I have an HD-A20 and a PS3 but leaned red because the extras did count. Bye Bye HD, you gave it your best, that's all we could ask. Sony, finish your damn product already!

The Numbers: 900+ DVDs (rapidly declining), 34 HD-DVDs (+1 on order, + 5 free), 17 BDs (+2 on order). Last movie: Close Encounters.

You are correct. But I wonder, since I can add to my Cart and proceed, would it simply not ship at that price ONCE STOCK ARRIVES?
    What do you think?

No no no. Programs like Planet Eearth are SOURCED in 1080i. Its 1080i all the way. They didn't take a 1080P source, then encode it as interlaced onto HD/BD and then let your player or TV deinterlace it.

    Its interlaced. Period.

For $200.00 who cares about 1080p or not. Ppl who are ok spending $200.00 on a player are going to spend 2k or less on their TV and chances are, they will be 1080i sets!

Not trying to dispute here, but do you have a reputable link that shows the majority (ie. over 50%) of HDTVs being sold right now are 1080P?

Because from what I've seen it appears that virtually every budget priced HDTV is 720P or 1080i (typically 1366x768 LCD and Plasmas), and those are the ones that more frugal - and typical - consumers tend to purchase right now.

I think he's right for 40 and larger TVs. I don't even know if they make 42inch 1080i's anymore....

But what he may not mention is that TVs all have deinterlacers, so a 1080i sig gets bumped automagically to 1080p.

Cable is only 720p or 1080i, and it will be a while b4 it goes to 1080p.

This is true.. my 36" is only 1080i - and my cable is only 1080i, and my Toshiba A2.

Still at that price, its cheap.. i would buy them up just to sell them on ebay. Also all those free movies - ebay ebay ebay.
I am no fanboy of anything - I just hate certain things less!

Check out the Future Shop and Best Buy Toronto Flyers and you'll see that a lot of HDTVs sold under $1900 are 720 or 1080i. It is surprising. In any case I have a spanking new 1080p superb JVC set that uses Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS for short) which was raved over in high end reviews as providing a better picture that most Plasmas and LCD up to 50% more expensive. And you know what? I play all my HD DVDs using my first gen HD-XA1 and the image is superbly vivid and very satisfying!!

Yesterday evening I dropped into the Futureshop on Kennedy in Toronto, they were sold out. I ask the guy to locate an A2 for me in the district (GTA), sold out. He couldn't check other districts but was pretty sure they're all gone anyways.

I hope something like this happens again.

I would have loved to have bought one for my da.

The truth of this matter is they only had a handful in stock on the website and each store only has a handful to sell at this price. It's a doorcrasher and a loss leader sale (like Toshi isn't taking enough of a loss already )!

This is not a sign that prices will be at 199.99 by Christmas for the HD-A2, it's not something the studios are going to look at to gauge the market and it only goes to show that I'm gonna end up reading about a thousand limited qty offers on this board come black friday and boxing day. Please....keep the deal posts to the Deal forums.

And in regards to my crippled comment, I want my TV and my player to be at least as good as my media. Now I don't have my bravia at the apartment right now, and I want a DTS-MA receiver when the PS3 can handle the encode but these are upgrades I look forward to making. The 1080i Toshiba players are just encouraging people to jump on the HD bandwagon early by sacrificing the "Full HD" standard, not a ploy I plan to play into and dirty pool in my book. It also can't handle the sound output options I prefer. Down the road, the 1080i toshiba players will be as popular as a 1.0 Blu-ray player..

Did anyone on this forum even get one at this price? Or just everyone's friend?
