Blu-ray Disc Association refutes myths - Blu-ray is OK with porn

Like consumers, the adult film industry has a choice to make when it comes to HD DVD and Blu-ray, the two formats vying to be the successor to DVD. A couple of stories on the subject have surfaced recently; the first claims that Blu-ray disc manufacturers don't want the porn industry releasing content on Blu-ray, while a second story says that adult filmmakers have decided to cast their lot with HD DVD.

Adult film producer There Joone told Heise Online that his company, Digital Playground, would be going with HD DVD for future HD releases. Joone reportedly said that none of the Blu-ray manufacturing facilities would press discs for his company, saying that Sony had threatened to pull their licenses if they produced adult content.

Ars contacted the Blu-ray Disc Association for comment on Joone's allegations. "There is not a prohibition against adult content," said Marty Gordon, vicechair of the BDA US Promotions Committee and vice president of the Philips Electronics Hollywood Office. "The BDA welcomes the participation of all companies interested in using and supporting the format, particularly those from the content industry. We look forward to working with any content providers interested in providing their audience with [the] best possible high definition home entertainment experience."

Now, let's not ignore the fact that Vivid has just released a press statement (http://www.tvpredictions.com/debbie011207.htm) announcing the upcoming release of Debbie Does Dallas...Again on both HD DVD and Blu-ray.

I think there are enough authoring companies out there that one or more of them will handle this work. If a given adult entertainment company wants to buy Blu-print from us, we will sell it to them. Replication is another matter because even as big as the adult industry is, it is not likely to have the resources to buy or build a replication plant. My advice to them is to outsource the replication overseas where plants may be more relaxed about handling this kind of product.

So, you will be able to get porn on both formats. I still don't see porn selling anywhere near as well as major movies, but no doubt most people will at least check one out. If Private releases on Blu-ray I'll probably pick up one of theirs, but I have no doubt that within a few years my Blu-ray collection will outnumber my porn collection 75-1

That's all well and good, but that doesn't change that studios like Digital Playground said they wanted to use Blu-ray but were told no. End result they're releasing in HD DVD now.

It does change the fact that they were not told no by Sony and no replication plant was told by Sony that if they ran off porn they would have their Blu-licence pulled.

It's stamping out FUD - most people are claiming that "Blu-ray and Sony are saying no to porn" which is not true at all.

By the time more houses have Blu-capable pressing facilities this will change. It's likely that the places saying no to Digital Playground have never pressed adult films period.

So Digital Playgrounds is releasing in Blu-ray then? Because they said they wanted to target the PS3 crowd, so if Sony is allowing it then they should be releasing it on Blu-ray.

Or maybe it's just that what is said publicly and privately are two different things and the 'insider' is just some guy with no claims as such. It doesn't change the fact that they wanted Blu-ray and couldn't get it made because they were told no simply because they're making porn. What actually is happening in the market isn't matching with what they're claiming.

More than likely they just don't like being told "we're too busy pressing real movies" and rather than waiting until an available slot or more pressing houses decided to go with HD DVD, which as everyone knows a pressing house can be had with very minor changes to the existing DVD line.
