Default Rumour: Star Trek The Motion Picture Franchise Exclusively On HD DVD In 2007

Saw this on AVS, so don't shoot the messenger. Would be huge if true.

Quote:
Kevin Collins, Director of HD DVD at Microsoft's Consumer Media Technology Group stated during a live chat tonight at Home Theater Forum that the Star Trek Movie franchise was coming exclusively to HD DVD in 2007. That would be a surprise since they are Paramount titles. Even if it does come to Blu-ray as well this is terrific news.

We're definitely getting the original TV series too, aren't we?

Well, I will be very excited when this comes out on HD DVD. I will definitely get the entire collection. It is not quite up there with Matrix, LOTR, and Star Wars, but it is still one of the best Sci-fi series out there. Irregardless of whether this os released on Blu-ray or not - this is great news.

Here as well. I am still in the mode of not updating previous gen to next gen... and all my star trek movies are still on VHS

It would be suprising if it were exclusive. As always, it is the rumor mill driving things instead of actual facts and announcements from the studios.

Someone wake me up when the studio makes an official announcement okay?

This may be fact for 2007 if Paramount wants it released with BD-Java, but it will not be an exclusive and it will not be because Paramount wants it out on HD DVD first, it will only be because features they want aren't ready yet or that they can't get in the pressing line-up in time. Sony are doing the MPEG-2 encodes for Paramount and have stated that each one takes 2 days.
I don't see why Paramount wouldn't switch to MPEG-4 in the near future with Sony testing the waters in the near future.
I'll reiterate - Paramount's Star Trek movies will be released on both formats.

I expect that they will be released on both, though you could be right about getting better BD-Java support first. I am happy though that Paramount is not delaying the HD DVD version just to be on par with Blu-ray.

As far as the two days goes, I am sure they can do all of them in parallel, so it should be 2 days more or less to do all of them.

Not sure if this is just more rumor or not, but interesting nonetheless:

If nothing else, just a little fan to the fire

Pretty enticing: Have a look! I want street dates now!

Excerpts:

"For instance, the Matrix trilogy will be coming out this year from WHV, Star Trek will be exclusive to HD DVD this year, Babel and The Good Shepherd. All in all there will be over 600 HD DVD titles by EOY."

"It is my understanding from the HD DVD group that it will be the feature films [Star Trek]"

"Universal announced "The Good Shepherd" and "Babel" They have a slew of titles that will be coming out in 2007. I have seen the list and it is very impressive, so there is nothing bad going on with Universal. you will be happy with what will happen in 2007!"

So then it is going to be one of those things where I am watching Star Trek, then six months later Blu-Ray will get.

He has seen the list and it is very impressive!
So far I count 5 titles from Universal by February 6th, which is 5 weeks into the year.
There is 10 times that amount in the year so Universal's 2007 output is looking to be about 52 titles.

Okay I'm obviously just having fun with the numbers that are already there, but seriously we're halfway through January with no additional titles announced for February. If Universal is going to be a big part of those additional 300 titles, when will they start releasing. If they haven't bumped it up soon when will they?

Universal released 57 titles in 2006. The most titles in one week they got out was 7 and that was only in one week. Will they wait until the second half of 2007 to start putting out titles at any sort of pace, because currently they're on pace for 52 titles as I already stated.

They have one title coming out on the following three Tuesdays and that's all that's announced so far. The list looks great, but HD DVD fans want content now - even half of what the Blu-ray fans are getting right now in number of titles would be viewed as great with such a difference in studio support.

I've got most of them on DVD, but there is a reason why we all upgraded to next-gen movie formats, isn't there?
