Default Toshiba Responds to Sony Stand-Alone Player Claims

Well, that didn't take long. Toshiba this afternoon issued a tersely-worded response to claims made by Sony at a CEDIA press conference last night.

As we first reported earlier today, Sony VP Chris Fawcett was quoted as saying that stand-alone Blu-ray players had begun out-selling their HD DVD counterparts over the last 12 weeks.

Given the extent to which HD DVD backers had previously emphasized their own lead in this category, Sony's claims set off a minor firestorm across the web -- so much so, apparently, that Toshiba felt compelled to issue its own statement in response this afternoon.

The statement reads as follows:

"In light of recent comments made regarding high definition stand-alone video players sales, Toshiba would like to reiterate its continued industry leading sales figures. Based on July data from NPD, Toshiba had a 55% market share year to date in high definition stand alone player sales followed by all Blu-ray companies at a combined 42%; the final 3 percent is held by dual format players.

While the competition may claim leadership based on one month of data, Toshiba has had continued sales leadership in every month since the original HD DVD players launched 17 months ago.

Toshiba is and continues to be a top seller at retailers such as Amazon, most recently reaching #1 on the site last week. As third generation players begin to come to market at the end of this month, Toshiba has full confidence that it will continue its momentum and lead in player sales. Additional information HD DVD and Toshiba’s players can be found at http://www.toshibahddvd.com"

Nobody is. It is the fact that there has to be a limit to the BULL Sony spreads. Very good for toshiba to put sony in its place.

So in NASCAR if a Toshiba driver is leading for the first 17 laps but then gets passed by Sony car, does that mean the scoreboard would still show Toshiba leading? Classic tortoise and hare scenario, he who leads in the end is the victor, not who lead the whole race.

What does that comment have to do with Toshiba factually proving Sony's statement is false?

If anyone is nervous its Sony.

They lost Paramount, they wont have a sub $200 player on the marker for the holiday and they wont be advertised on Sunday Night Football...

The SDF can only keep BD afloat for so long.

Only just September, the final August results havn't been released yet. Didn't Toshiba Command 70% of the HD stand alone market at the beginning of the year though? Looks like the price cuts on the entry Sony BD player ahve been paying off on the Stand Alone front.

And to think of all the people saying the prices of the stand alones doesn't matter

They did not prove Sony wrong, they proved them right. Sony claimed in the last 12 weeks they outsold HD DVD standalones and Toshiba countered with YTD numbers. So yes, Sony was right or Toshiba would have claimed something about the last 12 weeks.

So, for the figures-impaired crowd.

Toshiba says that year-to-date percentages are 55% HD, 42% BD, 3% DF. Sony has never said anything about that.

Sony has said that Blu-ray Disc set-top players have begun out-selling HD DVD set-top players.

Which is true.

The key word is "claim". The next keyword is "declined", in reference to what is specifically represented with the chart.

So again, Sony did nothing but make another PR statement they will bite them in the arse...

I'm still waiting for the 4th dimension of gaming...and Im still working my second job to buy a PS3 even if they don't release games...Im disciplined.

Wink Sony PS3 is NOT a BD player, but has software to Play BDs

Though it didn't mention PS3 in the article, I wouldn't be suprised if Sony was including the PS3 in there little round up. I am not gonna sit here and preach about how lame of a statement that was from Sony, because its the BDA and they are beyond lame (I was just BANNED from leaving comments in bluray.com forum for no reason given). Like Microsoft, I was behind Blu Ray before both formats came to market, Blu Ray was great on paper, but in reality, not worth it. HD-DVD is awsome, affordable, and all that quality Blu Ray raps about is found on HD-DVD as well
