Default Sony: Almost One Million BDs Sold

just posted:

Quote:
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed that it is close to having sold one million Blu-ray discs in North America since the format's launch in June of 2006.

The news came in a press release from Berlin's IFA show, where the studio announced that it has sold over 250,000 Blu-ray discs in Europe alone.

Sony says expects to pass the one million mark here in the US as it heads into a jam-packed fourth quarter slate, which includes such highly anticipated titles as 'Spider-Man 3' and 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind.'

"These sales milestones across the world illuminate the positive reception from retailers and consumers alike for Blu-ray," said David Bishop, President, Worldwide, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. "Our strong fourth quarter line-up will underscore the confidence in this format."

This latest news from Sony comes amidst a stream of announcements today from Blu-ray supporting companies at Berlin's IFA trade fair. According to Sony's release, Blu-ray discs now account for 69% of the total high-definition market in Europe, with Sony titles making up more than 47% of the total European Blu-ray market.

I knew you'd have some of kind of crack on the PS3. Are Micro$oft and To$hiba paying you well?

But you know what.... I'll let my inner fanboy show a bit...

I wonder how many discs were moved on HD DVdud by comparison.

HD-DVD fanboys are just looking for a reason to lash out. Can't wait to see what the Daewoo BD player is going to retail for.

Here are some numbers that should depress you if you are a HD-DVD fanatic.

Funny, I actually clicked on that link to seriously consider what was written there. Of course after seeing that the very first words were "Recently, Bill Hunt"....

wow... bill hunt read the book how to lie with statistics... what a jackass... and people believe him just like they'll beleive anything sony feeds them... We have the future... we almost have it done... 2 years later bd+ and bd-j are still not fully working. why did denon delay their bd player again? shipped and sold are two differrent things... i see many sony bd discs siting on shelves... at least all the other movie studios only count sold.

Facts are facts. Your personal feelings towards an individual doesn't change the data.

Your optimizism make me smile though.

Even if you want to stick to your theory that all Sony disc sales are units shipped then it still points towards a retail market that has either had to restock more BD product or believes that BD has better selling potential.

1.5 million PS3's=1 million BD sales. That doesn't sound right.

The broad assumption that all PS3 owners are HDTV owners is ignorant. How many kids have PS3s in their rooms on little TVs and can't afford a $27 movie. Most people are not going to invest $10 extra per movie when they won't see the difference.

The up side to that number is every PS3 owner is a potential BD customer.

The date on your link is prior to Paramount's move.

A 0 .66 movie attatch rate for PS3 would be a good reason for Paramount to make their move. That attach rate excludes BD stand alone players.

You obviously missed the last sentence that said it has been updated since the Paramount announcement.

"Note: I updated this piece on August 20th with updated YTD results from the studios and included the impact from the Paramount/Dreamworks decision to support HD DVD exclusively."

I would also like to add that I love how someone like Bill Hunt becomes an enemy of the state for his opnion about the outcome of the format war. If he were a HD-DVD supporter and those numbers reflected a positive outcome for HD-DVD then you'd be shoving it in our face.

I was pointing that the title was "Why the HD DVD / Blu ray War is Over" and the announcement Paramount went the other way sort of debunked the argument. The update of Box Office numbers isn't what should have been update, the status of the war needed updated. The entire article is irrelevant. Not everyone sees through Bill Hunt's prism and in fact I bet you could fit the amount of people who even know who Bill Hunt is in the Disney BD promo travel trailer. He is a guy with an opinion that means nothing to anyone except a couple of BD forum hoppers. I never heard of him until I visited this site, did you?

They can't afford a $27 movie but they can affrod a $500 to $600 game system?
