Default Prediction: What will sell better, 300 HD DVD or Spiderman?

OK, according to Warner, the movie '300' sold just under 100k units on HD DVD in the first two weeks (97k, to be exact). That's something the biggest BD seller so far - Casino Royale - couldn't pull off.

So, with the (arguably) "biggest title" yet coming to Blu-ray Oct. 30 - Spiderman - what do you think will be the bigger seller for the first two week after release:

    1- '300' HD DVD
2- 'Spiderman' - The HD Trilogy
    3- 'Spiderman 3'

Nope, you don't get to count combined sales of both Spidey titles, only individual titles.

Be aware, this is a Public Poll.

Are you ........? How can you even start a thread like this? I STRONGLY question your logic skills.
    Spiderman will sell more.
Add up the box office total of the three Spiderman movies and then compare that to 300's.

    - Box office doesn't always translate into disc sales. Hot Fuzz has already made more money on HD DVD/DVD than it did in the theaters, for example.

    - High prices of Spiderman BD

    - Split sales between the Trilogy / SM3.

While I've only seen SM1 on DVD (I hated it, too stupid for me), I've read a lot of fans like 1 & 2 but hate 3. So, I think it will be similar to The Matrix - the high price / forced combination of all 3 into one package will lead to a lot of folks waiting for the individual release of SM1 & SM2.

That ratio almost universally goes up, it's extremely rare that a movie that makes it into the top 10 box office grossing movies of ALL time sells poorly on home video releases.

    - High prices of Spiderman BD
How much are they going for on Amazon? HD-DVD fanboy FUD, and if you claim that you're not a HD-DVD fanboy I'd have to call BS on that too.

    - Split sales between the Trilogy / SM3.
this COULD affect it, but with the numbers of players out there having practically another month to build up and since the players are already in Blu-Ray's favor I see it only getting worse over the next 2 months.

It might be like the Matrix, but nowhere near as bad.

I'd say that with the Spider-Man trilogy getting up in the numbers at Amazon 2 months before it's to be released, I'd have to say that both the movie and the trilogy will defeat your expectations.

Spiderman 3 (2 Blu-ray disc version of the single movie) is $29.95 on Amazon - only $2 more than Hot Fuzz, 300, and Evan Almightly (based on the same MSRP as Hot Fuzz) on HD-DVD.

Please keep in mind this poll states "300 on HD DVD" and not 300 alone. remember that 300 on Blu-ray got twice the sales as 300 on HD DVD.

    300 Blu-ray 190,000
    300 HD DVD 97,000

Spiderman 3 would also be included the HD trilogy - so its total purchase will be both combine if you counted it that way.

So in a lot of ways this is misguided poll.

It's not that difficult to understand what he means. For the purposes of this poll, Spider-man 3 by itself is a seperate SKU than the Spider-Man trilogy.

First of all Casino Royale did not step into the game with 300,000 players on the market either. If you want to make things even, how about we ask which HD DVD title has been in the top 10 for 5 months straight? Casino Royale is the ONLY one to pull this off. So, comparing 300 to Casino isn't quite even.

So, with the (arguably) "biggest title" yet coming to Blu-ray Oct. 30 - Spiderman - what do you think will be the bigger seller for the first two week after release:
There is no argument about it, it's the biggest title. (Whether it is the "best" title, now that's a different story! ) Biggest let down of the summer for me.

    1- '300' HD DVD
2- 'Spiderman' - The HD Trilogy
    3- 'Spiderman 3'
Aren't choices 2 and 3 a slice from the same pie? Am I voting that the Trilogy will outsell the single disc? Cause from the start of the thread you were making this out to be 300 Vs. Spidey. Now it's 300 vs. Spidey vs. Spidey.

I'll take 2 & 3 beats 1. Is there an option for that?

I didn't say Spiderman3 would sell "poorly", I would be surprised if does sell poorly. That's not the question poised.

How much are they going for on Amazon? HD-DVD fanboy FUD, and if you claim that you're not a HD-DVD fanboy I'd have to call BS on that too.
Well, yes, I will take issue being called a fanboy of anything. As my Signature indicates, I own both formats, but as my Smackdown postings indicate, I do prefer HD DVD, and especially defend it against BD fanboy attacks - not that I am calling you a fanboy. As for "high prices on Amazon", I was going by the posts right here in the HDD Blu-ray forum complaining about the $89.09 price on Amazon for the Trilogy.

But, how can starting a poll an asking for folks' Prediction be called FUD?

I'd say that with the Spider-Man trilogy getting up in the numbers at Amazon 2 months before it's to be released, I'd have to say that both the movie and the trilogy will defeat your expectations.

Well, having my "logic" questioned in starting this poll, I looked at eProductwars before starting the Poll. The SM Trilogy is #8 for BD, with a overall sales rank of 226 two & a half months before release. The $29.95 SM3 has a sales rank of 858. By comparison, the Blade Runner Collector's Edition BD is the #5 BD title with a sales rank of 150 - four months before release.

No, because the Poll Question is "Which will be the biggest seller for the first 2 weeks of release?"

So, yes - if your vote for the Trilogy, then you are voting it will outsell SM3 AND the 300 HD DVD. And Vice-versa. But if you vote for 300 HD DVD, then you are voting it will have outsold either SKU of Spiderman.

Alright, I'm going with the Trilogy then. (Still don't think the Casino comparison quite fits. The install base of players is so much higher now, as well as the advertising for hi-def in general. Just an opinion.)

I'm gonna say Spiderman 3 will have the biggest 2 week number. We've seen how catalog titles sort of flounder compared to new hits, so I don't think the box set will outsell the single movie. The $50 price is of course uber ridiculous but I think the title will be heavily discounted the first week.

There will likely be over 2 million BD capable players by the time Spiderman 3 hits and its targeted at the PS3 demographic at least as well as 300. Should be a blow out.

    Interesting Poll Conchise.

    Voted SM3 because:
    1. Sony is going to want to see a result like that so if they are smart they will go all out push with huge ad+tie-ins to rack up sales #s - hopefully using that "shipped" nonsense to boost the figures.
    2. Its new (not catalog title) +cheaper than 3 pack.
Although HD DVD owners buy a lot in 1st couple weeks then fall off the sales chart while BD sales plateau. Sony has got to hype up the release to get the lazy BD owners like myself to buy in the 1st week instead of waiting 2 weeks later. We will see.

This is a loaded poll (separating the complete box set from s3), but the answer is Spiderman 3.

    Cochise -

Don't you love it? Even starting a poll gets you shit on anymore. Plus, you pointed out CR did not sell as well as 300 on HD DVD, so of course you're flaming BD.

Makes you not want to try and have fun on this forum, doesn't it?

Anywho, I voted Spiderman 3. I am pleased with how well 300 did on HD DVD, but if 300 was a BD sort of movie, how could Spiderman 3 not be?
    Now watching: Inception, duh.

Now playing: Medal of Honor on PSN; Black Ops on XBOX Live.
