WOW! And 52% of that was from 3D. Which is great in terms of revenue. And really surprising considering I was led to believe nobody should see it in 3D because it's a conversion.
Conversion is getting better especially if its planned for from the start and the shots are designed with that in mind. Shooting in 2D allows film making in the traditional way without bulking expensive and fragile 3D equipment and allows the 3D infrastructure behinds the scenes out of the field environment. So it has some advantages. As the tech has gotten better so has the 2D to 3D conversion process.

The worst cases of the bad rep 2D to 3D conversion had was when it was done hasty (Clash of the Titans) or added on after the shooting was executed when it was not planned for and was added after the fact. Thank goodness its gotten better over time. Now lets hope more theaters show it the way it was intended to look like in 3D in most theaters.

Well I was saying cynically, that people who haven't seen the movie yet are discouraging others from seeing it in 3D simply because it's a conversion.

For now, conversion is seen as a shortcut, a cheat, a moneygrab. Even though the postconversion artists are achieving almost native looking results, the cinematography captured in camera is what dictates the potential. And without a 3D preview on-set for the director to respond to in realtime, it's going to be hard to compete with native 3D films like Hugo and Avatar. Conversion is fine for action scenes, most people praise the 3D then, but it's the down-time that people complain added nothing to the experience. Conversion can push and pull and "cheat" the geography of the scene to avoid uncomfortable images, but it can't make a dull shot exciting. If you shot your film in native you could go, "That looked dull, let's reshoot that scene."

Thanks for the information. I pretty much agree with you here. The only thing I wonder about is the information most consumers have about the details. I'm not sure most consumers at that involved.

Most people don't know/won't care if a movie's a conversion. But the enthusiast forums will be full of stingy people like myself (only far far more negative and bitter and insecure), but that only makes up a small percentage of the population.

Speaking of which, I'm seeing this in 11 hours.

The dialogue scenes may not be Hugo quality, but I can't imagine seeing the action scenes in just 2D.

The Ultimate 2012 Summer Movie Trailer

May 7, 2012 by Ben Kendrick

The summer 2012 movie season kicked off in a big way this past weekend with The Avengers – racking up a record breaking $207 million domestic opening weekend box office haul. While you can read our review of The Avengers, hear us talk about the film in a special edition of the Screen Rant Underground podcast, as well as chat about the movie in our Avengers spoilers discussion – we’re already looking forward to what the rest of the summer has to offer movie-lovers.

In honor of our favorite season for film, we’re continuing the tradition of crafting one big all-encompassing sneak peek at the summer blockbuster schedule with an Ultimate 2012 Summer Movie Trailer (which you can find above).

In prior years, our intrepid friend Mike Eisenberg edited-together footage from the most anticipated films in the upcoming release slate – creating both the Ultimate 2010 Summer Movie Trailer and Ultimate 2011 Summer Movie Trailer. This year, Mike has been keeping busy with his own film, Stitches (you can find out more about the film at the Tall Tale Productions Facebook page) - so we’ve handed mash-up duties over to fellow video editor extraordinaire Chris Molinaro.
In the Ultimate 2012 Summer Movie Trailer, you’ll see plenty of highly-anticipated releases including The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Prometheus, and more.

As mentioned, check out the video at the top of the page (if you haven’t already) as well as the full list of included movies (and their respective release dates) below.

    The Avengers – May 4th
    Dark Shadows - May 11th
    The Dictator – May 11th
    Battleship – May 18th
What to Expect When You’re Expecting - May 18th

    Brave - June 22nd
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World - June 22nd
    G.I. Joe Retaliation - June 29th

Ice Age: Continental Drift – July 13th
    Ted - July 13th
The Dark Knight Rises - July 20th
The Bourne Legacy – August 3rd
    Total Recall - August 3rd
    The Expendables 2 – August 17th
    ParaNorman – August 17th
    Lawless - August 31st

Overall, a pretty solid line-up this summer with some especially high-profile film releases. Of course, the trailer itself isn’t all-inclusive so for the full listing of movie releases this summer check out our Summer 2012 Movie Preview article – which contains info on a number of other buzz-worthy projects.

We have some other cool video content ideas in the pipeline but, in the meantime, make sure to tell all your friends about this latest Screen Rant trailer mash-up!

Follow me on Twitter @benkendrick for movie, TV, and gaming news and Chris Molinaro @Molinaro4Prez for future video mash-ups (as well as a pretty entertaining faux presidential campaign).

Just got home from Avengers in 3D. I didn't have high expectations, and it turned out to be pretty average. The action shots really added some visual flare for the 3D to capitalize on.

But nothing can beat native 3D- the Brave trailer looked really, really, really good, even just the dialogue shots smashed Avengers' 3D, because it was much rounder and stronger.

Spider-man looked really good with the acrobatic Spidey shots, first person webslinging, and fight scenes.

Frankenweenie (postconverted stop motion) looked ever so slightly above average.

Long Range Forecast: 'The Amazing Spider-Man', 'Katy Perry: Part Of Me', & 'Savages'

FEATURED STORIES - on May 12, 2012 by BOXOFFICE Staff

This week, we've added three new releases to our Long Range Forecast. 2012's Independence Day entries include The Amazing Spider-Man (currently scheduled to open on Tuesday, July 3), Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D (on Thursday, July 5), and Oliver Stone's Savages (Friday, July 6).

Prior to last year, 2004's Spider-Man 2 held the three-day Independence Day weekend record with $88.2 million (after opening on Wednesday). That changed when Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon launched to $97.9 million in 2011 (also with a late Tuesday/Wednesday debut). The first Transformers rounds out the top three openers of the holiday weekend with its $70.5 million haul (following a Tuesday release) in 2007.

    The Amazing Spider-Man

    PROS:

    - As a firmly established property across all ages, especially kids, the Spider-Man brand still has a lot of appeal and is backed by a history of huge numbers.
    - The film has the coveted spot of being the marquee attraction for the lucrative Independence Day holiday week/weekend.
    - The Tuesday opening could help it steamroll positive word of mouth if the film doesn't disappoint.
    - While it won't be able to come anywhere close to Avengers numbers, there could be at least a small boost of goodwill from that film.
    - Its online positive-to-negative comment ratio has improved with every trailer -- as has its buzz -- which is a rarity.
    - Competitive advantage: 3D prices. Plus, not much competition for older audiences until The Dark Knight Rises hits.

    CONS:

    - Spider-Man 3 left a stigma on the series similar to how Batman & Robin did for that franchise before Christopher Nolan stepped in. Batman had seven years of downtime, while Spidey only has five. Sequels and reboots always pay for the sins of their predecessors.
    - Superhero reboots typically don't set the box office on fire. See Batman Begins and Superman Returns, both of which struggled to reach $200 million. And unlike those two films, The Amazing Spider-Man doesn't even have the luxury of being the first *or* second most anticipated superhero film of its summer.
    - Pirates of the Caribbean, Shrek, and X-Men all saw their fourth entries decline in total ticket sales by nearly half from their direct predecessors (none of which were very well-received either).
    - While its social media buzz has improved with each trailer, it is still miles off from what The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises were at.
    - This is the dark side of what Christopher Nolan's Batman legacy hath already wrought: an industry that thinks a darker and less friendly tone can successfully apply to every superhero. This could seriously impact its core kiddie audience *and* older fans of the original movies.
    - The Avengers has probably stolen a lot of this film's thunder, and Nolan's Batman finale will likely steal the rest of it.
    - Many are already wondering why the origin is being remade just 10 years after it was done successfully. Audiences want something fresh or familiar.
    - New cast + no star power = no familiarity for non-fans to latch onto.
    - Competitive disadvantage: Brave should still have a solid kiddie audience at this point and Ice Age 4 releases just one week later. If G.I. Joe: Retaliation somehow surprises, that would spell doom for Amazing Spider-Man getting any traction with younger crowds.

Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D

    PROS:

    - Katy Perry has been and continues to be the "it" pop star of the moment.
    - Huge album sales and popularity, appeal to both men and women, and her large teen girl audience could all serve this very well.
    - Justin Bieber's, Miley Cyrus's, and Michael Jackson's concert movies all pulled very similar numbers (averaging $27 million on opening weekend and about $69 million total).
    - Its not exactly scientific, but, the summer release fits nicely with Perry's "summery" image. The date could very well be the right time of year for this.
    - Holiday week/weekend could beef up the audience slightly. No direct competition follows it either.
    - Given the target audience, it could post strong summer midweek numbers, though weekend numbers could be deflated a bit in turn as well.

    CONS:

    - Releasing in the heart of summer is still a risk, and generally unprecedented, for a 3D concert movie.
    - The Jonas Brothers' movie disappointed a few years back, but their level of popularity wasn't anywhere near that of Perry or the other aforementioned concert movie leads.
    - Rock of Ages goes after a similar audience just a few weeks earlier.
    - Perry's fan base might not be quite as obsessive as those of Cyrus and Bieber who had a TV show and a swoon factor in their favor, respectively. Repeat viewings may be low.
    - Bieber's movie ran Twitter for weeks upon weeks before his film. That said, the search string for this isn't very convenient thanks to the name of the film.

    Savages

    PROS:

    - Universal wouldn't have moved it to the summer if they weren't incredibly confident about it. This could be a mid-summer sleeper.
    - Oliver Stone. Its not significant, but his name is at least somewhat appealing to select adult crowds.
    - There's not much in the way of adult thrillers at this time of the year. If Amazing Spider-Man disappoints, a few extra moviegoers might be willing to take a chance on this.
    - In addition to Stone's presence, there are also a lot of notable names in the ensemble cast.
    - In a summer filled with superhero films and popcorn flicks, this looks to be a gritty real world film that might appeal to both men and women.

    CONS:

    - Oliver Stone. His box office track record leaves much to be desired for such a prolific name. He's only had one film top $76 million. That was 26 years ago.
    - Mainstream audiences will favor something like G.I. Joe: Retaliation over this.
    - Could be too serious for summer. These types of films are usually better suited with fall releases.
    - John Travolta is coming off of two box office bombs: From Paris with Love and Old Dogs. He also has a heap of negative buzz surrounding him about propositioning different folk. Its all supposedly fabricated, but negative perception of a moral nature when it comes to a star never helps (see Tom Cruise).

Notable changes on our forecast this week include slight revisions on The Dictator, Battleship, and What to Expect When You're Expecting.

Check out our predictions for these and other upcoming films in the table below.

4-Minute ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Preview Features a Potentially Classic Spidey Scene

Posted on Monday, May 14th, 2012 by Russ Fischer

Tonight on the season premiere of America’s Got Talent Columbia/Sony ran a 4-minute ‘super preview’ for Marc Webb‘s The Amazing Spider-Man. For the most part, this was the most recent trailer with a long single scene tacked on to the beginning.

That said, the new scene that opens this preview is some great, classic Spidey action. I’ve been a little hit and miss on some of the views of this take on the character; I liked what we saw at Comic Con but wasn’t as wild about the latest trailer. But the scene that opens this preview is almost exactly what I like about Spider-Man: a character that, while super-powered, is still totally grounded with the fears of the people he’s trying to help.

Check out the scene, and the full preview, below.

I’d like to see this scene in the full context of the film — I get the impression it is compressed here — but I just love Spidey unmasking himself for a kid, and giving the mask over while he tries to save the little guy. That stands up with the subway car sequence from Spider-Man 2 as a scene that really captures a special essence of the character.

One of the world’s most popular characters is back on the big screen as a new chapter in the Spider-Man legacy is revealed in The Amazing Spider-Man. Focusing on an untold story that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story, the new film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, with Martin Sheen and Sally Field. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt, based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the film in association with Marvel Entertainment for Columbia Pictures, which will open in theaters everywhere in 3D on July 3, 2012.

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

‘Prometheus’ Clip: On Approach to Doom

May 14, 2012 by Jason Marrero

If the Advil and sunglasses aren’t enough to help cure your P.A.S. (Post Avengers Syndrome), then perhaps the next round of blockbusters can help guide you on your road to recovery.

In a summer that will be dominated by big names such as The Avengers, Spider-Man and Batman, 20th Century Fox’s Prometheus continues to build a slow buzz, just waiting for its chance to attack the box office. Apple has released the first official clip from Prometheus, and if you’ve seen the trailers for the Ridley Scott (Alien, Gladiator) directed sci-fi film, then you are well aware that Prometheus feels much more like an event than an actual film.

The clip shows a team of explorers on board the spacecraft Prometheus, as it prepares for landing on an alien planet. As rumors continue about Prometheus possibly being an Alien prequel, one has to wonder if the crew is preparing for landing on the same planet from Scott’s 1979 classic. Scott and the film’s crew continue to keep mum on whether Prometheus has any direct affiliation to the Alien franchise.

The crew of Prometheus consist of an A-list cast led by Noomi Rapace (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class, Shame), Charlize Theron (Snow White and the Huntsman) and Idris Elba (The Wire, Thor).

The official synopsis for Prometheus, courtesy of Fox, reads as follows:

“Ridley Scott, director of “Alien” and “Blade Runner,” returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.”
Is it possible that by the end of the summer of 2012 we may look back at all of the blockbusters the season brings us and still be talking about how Prometheus walked away with the crown?
