HMM Nielsen Videoscan First Alert Sales Report Week Ending 06/24/12
'Sherlock Holmes' Sequel Tops Sales Chart for Second Week
27 Jun, 2012
By: Thomas K. Arnold

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
Warner Home Video’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows remained the top-selling disc for the second consecutive week, while another Warner title, Project X, was the highest-ranking new release the week ended June 24.
Project X, a teen-party-gone-wild comedy, debuted at No. 2 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks overall disc sales, as well as Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart. The Hangover-like film grossed $54.7 million in theaters and features a cast of mostly attractive unknowns.
Another new release, Universal Studios’ Big Miracle, a $20 million-grossing drama with Drew Barrymore, debuted at No. 3 on First Alert and No. 6 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, behind 20th Century Fox’s Act of Valor at No. 3, Walt Disney Studio’s John Carter at No. 4 and Universal Studios’ Safe House at No. 5.
On First Alert, Act of Valor at No. 4 and Safe House at No. 5 rounded out the top five sellers.
Of the films in the top five on either chart, John Carter generated the highest percentage of its weekly sales from Blu-ray Disc, at 50%. Big Miracle was on the low end, at 31%.
On Home Media Magazine’s weekly video rental chart, the No. 1 spot went to This Means War, from 20th Century Fox, fresh off its 28-day moratorium from Netflix and Redbox. The prior week the film was No. 82.
The Paramount comedy Jeff, Who Lives at Home, debuted at No. 2. Paramount is one of the only studios that doesn’t hold back titles from rental outlets.

Note: The-Numbers made corrections to their cumulative data in their Opusdata database as it got in final estimates for week ending 06/15/12. The reported numbers for last week have not changed but cumulative totals and the incremental reported figures for this week and beyond have and probably will be adjusted further as their goal in most accurate cumulative sales data and since they do not revise published weekly data those are running changes. In this particular case, they are acknowledging that their initial estimates for the latest Sherlock Holmes release were too high.

Blu-ray Sales: New Releases Lose to the Game
There were four new releases to reach the top ten on the Blu-ray sales chart this week, but none of them were able to unseat Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. That film remained in first place with 444,000 units / $11.08 million for the week lifting its totals to 1.90 million units / $44.59 million after two.
Project X was well back in second place with 232,000 units / $5.34 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 37%, which is okay for this type of release. It is aimed at the right demographic for Blu-ray, but it is not a film that needs to be seen in high definition.
Act of Valor slipped to third place with 93,000 units / $2.32 million over the week for a three-week total of 1.20 million / $26.23 million.
John Carter rose to fourth place with 90,000 units / $2.07 million. It has now sold 1.07 million units and generated $22.17 million. Had the film's theatrical numbers been merely weak and not a complete disaster, its home market numbers might have saved the film.
Safe House traded places with John Carter falling to fifth place with 87,000 units / $2.10 million for the week. After three weeks of release, it has sold 958,000 units and generated $20.27 million in sales.
Wanderlust opened in ninth place with 43,000 units / $856,000. This is not a prime release for high definition, but an opening week Blu-ray share of 37% is strong for this type of release.
The final new release to chart was Seeking Justice, which landed in tenth place with 34,000 units / $671,000. An opening week Blu-ray share of 35% is rather weak, but everything about this film's performance has been weak.
The overall Blu-ray market collapsed when compared to last week, and that's taking into account last week downward revisions.
Sales fell 53% in terms of units and 54% in terms of dollars, which is obviously not a good result, but it is a result of weak new releases and not some weakness in the overall market.
In fact, the overall market was much higher than last year, up 189% in terms of units and 203% in terms of revenue. DVD sales were also down compared to last week, but by a less extreme margin, and were basically flat compared to last year. This meant the overall Blu-ray share fell to 39% in terms of units and 47% in terms of revenue, but that's better than expected for this time of year.
Next week is looking pretty good with a quartet of films that should do significant business on high definition. 21 Jump Street will probably lead the way, but I'm not 100% sure on that. Last year, the best-selling new release was the Lord of the Rings Box Set. That release managed nearly $20 million in opening week sales. There's a chance no release this year will do the same. On the other hand, the second best selling release was Sucker Punch at just over $4 million. This year there is a lot more depth and we should still see solid growth in terms of units, if not revenue.

Happy Fouth of July (And Schedule Information)
Tomorrow, Wednesday, is the Fourth of the July, and it is the absolutely worst day of the week for the holiday to land on. If it lands on the weekend or on a Monday or a Friday, it is just a regular four-day weekend. If it lands on a Tuesday or Thursday, a lot of people take the extra day off and it is an extended weekend. When it lands on a Wednesday, the whole week is a write-off. All studios are closed on Wednesday, most will be closed on Thursday, many will be closed on Friday. This means we will be dealing with incomplete data until Monday. Additionally, because Canada Day holiday was yesterday, regularly scheduled columns for the week will be spread out a bit with the DVD and Blu-ray release report coming out late tonight / early tomorrow, international numbers might be limited to a handful of studio estimates, etc. By Monday evening, we should be completely back on schedule.

http://www.the-numbers.com/interacti...hp?newsID=7393DVD Sales: Shadows Linger On Top
None of the new releases were able to overtake Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows for top spot on the DVD sales chart. It repeated in first place with 497,000 units / $7.44 million for the week giving it totals of 1.75 million units / $26.14 million after two. It is already the fifth best selling DVD released in 2012. The best of the new releases was Project X in second place with 394,000 units / $5.87 million. This is a very strong start given the film's production budget. Big Miracle was well back in third place with 185,000 units / $2.95 million. The film flopped in theaters and this is only a marginally better result. Act of Valor slipped a spot to fourth place with 129,000 units / $2.56 million over the week for a total of 926,000 units / $15.65 million after three. Safe House remained in fifth place with 119,000 units / $2.14 million for the week giving it a three-week total of 918,000 units / $15.93 million.
Wanderlust rounded out the top ten with 73,000 units / $1.17 million. There's no way to spin that number in a positive way. Seeking Justice just missed the top ten with 62,000 units / $966,000. This is good compared to its theatrical run, but that's damning it with faint praise.

21 Jump Street
'Wrath of the Titans' Tops Blu-ray Chart
Two big spring movies battled it out on home video the week ended July 1, and the outcome was a draw.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s 21 Jump Street, the $138.4 million-grossing theatrical hit loosely based on the 1980s TV series of the same name, debuted at No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks overall disc sales, as well as Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart.
Meanwhile, Warner’s Wrath of the Titans, a ‘PG-13’-rated actioner that earned $83.7 million in U.S. theaters, bowed at No. 1 on Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.
Wrath of the Titans generated 55% of its unit sales from Blu-ray, as opposed to just 41% for the ‘R’-rated 21 Jump Street.
A third new release, 20th Century Fox’s Mirror Mirror, a comedic take on the Snow White fairy tale starring Julia Roberts, debuted at No. 3 on both sales charts, just ahead of Warner’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which dropped to No. 4 its third week in stores.
A fourth new release, the critically hailed The Artist, from Sony Pictures, debuted at No. 5 on both sales charts and No. 6 on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart.
Neither Wrath of the Titans nor Mirror Mirror were among the week’s top 20 rentals due to the fact that issuing studios Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox hold back new releases from selected rental outlets.
Debuting at No. 2 on the rental chart was Paramount’s A Thousand Words, a comedy that grossed just $18.5 million in U.S. theaters. The film bowed at No. 12 on First Alert and No. 21 on Nielsen’s Blu-ray Disc sales chart.
