15 May, 2012
By: John Latchem

Paramount Home Media Distribution has given Best Buy a number of exclusive Blu-rays of its catalog titles in recent months, such as the May 15 release of Road Trip in HD.
But an exclusive on the Blu-ray for a new theatrical title is much more unusual. Yet that’s the case with The Devil Inside, an early 2012 horror title with a modest box office cume for which the Blu-ray is available only at Best Buy, at $22.99. (Contrast this with Target, which didn't bother advertising the DVD version in its weekly ad circular.)
Best Buy also had a promotion to get $10 Fandango cash to see Battleship or Snow White & the Huntsman with purchase of the Blu-rays for The Kingdom ($7.99), Jarhead, The Mummy or The Scorpion King ($9.99 each). Furthermore, buyers could get a $10 Best Buy gift card with the purchase of any three TV DVD or Blu-ray titles at $14.99 or higher each.
Walmart offered the DVD of The Devil Inside at $14.96 with a bonus digital rental from its Vudu movie-streaming service.
Target offered a promotion touting USA Network shows on DVD, such as “Covert Affairs” and “White Collar.” The chain also had an exclusive DVD of Men in Black: The Animated Series — Season One at $14.99, which includes a $10 coupon for a ticket for the upcoming Men in Black 3.

Its not just the number count of the releases or the total TBO, its their overall strength genre and the number of tent poles that affect home video sales .
Here is a breakdown of the over $100 M box office titles (or close to ) from your list.
There is an obvious advantage in the comparisons there now in favor of 2011 YTD that's far more explanatory than the count you did above.
Its sorted by general Blu-ray genre favorability as defined by typical genre Blu-ray marketshare.
You have in 2011 to date not quite double, 12 to 7, titles that grossed around $100 M or more. Plus there are four Blu-ray friendly high Blu-ray marketshare titles YTD in 2011 and only two in 2012.
Obviously there is a huge advantage there for 2011 that's much more that just adding up the box office totals of all the more minor releases.
There is a lot more tentpoles released in the 2011 data and a lot more 2:1 that were high Blu-ray marketshare genres.
Drama Horror and Crime now in green.
(Sorted by relative strength of genre for Blu-ray not by first week unit marketshare.)

Updated table with 2012 and 2012 first week Blu-ray marketshare added as suggested by bruceames.
Drama Horror and Crime now in green.
(Sorted by first week unit marketshare, grouped by 10% BD marketshare increments.)
Just one possible observation: 2011 YTD had 9 $100+ titles over 33% BD marketshare, 2012 YTD had 4.

The-Numbers DVD and Blu-ray Sales Estimates Week Ending 05/06/12

http://www.the-numbers.com/interacti...hp?newsID=7269
Blu-ray Sales: New Releases Go Haywire
We are in the slowest time of year on the home market, and it is really showing on the Blu-ray sales chart.
There were only three new releases to place on the Blu-ray sales chart this week, and only one of them earned a respectable opening week Blu-ray share.
Haywire opened in first place with 185,000 units / $3.69 million giving it a Blu-ray share of 49%. That's a solid percentage for a film that struggled to find an audience in theaters.
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol remained in second place with 134,000 units / $2.86 million for the week and 1.70 million units / $37.37 million after three weeks of release.
Joyful Noise earned first place on the DVD sales chart, but only managed third place on Blu-ray with 117,000 units / $2.34 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 23%, which is only about average for the genre.
Contraband fell from first to fourth with 116,000 units / $2.86 million over the week and 626,000 units / $13.05 million after two.
New Year's Eve opened in fifth place with just 89,000 units / $1.81 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was an anemic 19%, which is soft, even for this type of film.
There were no other new releases to chart this week.
Like last week, overall Blu-ray sales were mixed, and in the same way.
Sales were down from last week with 20% fewer units sold and 16% less revenue generated. Compared to last year, sales were up 69% in terms of units and 87% in terms of dollars.
It was the exact opposite for DVD sales, as they performed much better than Blu-ray when compared to last week, but much worse when compared to last year.
The overall Blu-ray share was lower compared to last week at 35% in terms of units and 40% in terms of dollars, but that was much higher than the same week last year.
It is worth noting that this is better than expected, given the weak slate of new releases on Blu-rays. The top two selling DVDs were the wrong genre for high definition.
Next week is not much stronger than this week in terms of the Blu-ray market. The Vow will likely lead the way on DVD, but Underworld: Awakenings should top the Blu-ray chart resulting in a weak overall Blu-ray share.
However, Underworld: Awakenings should easily outperform last year's new releases, so the year-over-year comparison should be strong.

http://www.the-numbers.com/interacti...hp?newsID=7266DVD Sales: New Year's Eve Makes a Joyful Noise on the Home Market
New releases dominated the top of the DVD sales chart this week. This includes two films that could make a claim for first place: Joyful Noise and New Year's Eve. Joyful Noise led the way in terms of units at 399,000 units to 390,000 units, but New Year's Eve led the way in terms of raw dollars at $7.02 million to $6.38 million. Given their respective production budgets, this is a good start on the home market.
Haywire opened in third place with 196,000 units / $2.94 million. The film struggled at the box office, despite its reviews, but I was hoping it would find a bigger audience on the home market.
Contraband fell from first to fourth with 138,000 units / $2.76 million over the week for totals of 608,000 units / $10.28 million after two.
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol fell to fifth place with 116,000 units / $1.74 million for the week and 991,000 units / $15.19 million after three. Had it opened with that amount, I would not have been surprised. Fortunately, it is selling much better on Blu-ray.
The only other new release to chart was Bubble Guppies DVD debut, which placed twelfth with 53,000 units / $685,000. This is excellent for a preschool DVD.

The-Numbers DVD and Blu-ray Sales Estimates Week Ending 05/13/12

http://www.the-numbers.com/interacti...hp?newsID=7286Blu-ray Sales: Underworld Reaches for the Sky
The same four new releases that charted on the DVD sales chart also charted on the Blu-ray sales chart this week, with just one addition. (And that one addition is actually related to the top film.)
Leading the way was Underworld: Awakening, which earned $11.77 million from 590,000 units sold. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 56%, which is becoming commonplace for action films.
The Vow was a distant second place with 253,000 units / $5.82 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share a mere 24%; however, while that is weak compared to the format as a whole, it is in line with expectations given its genre and target audience.
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol fell to third with 110,000 units / $2.21 million for the week, giving it totals of 1.81 million units / $39.58 million after four.
The Avengers helped lift a couple Marvel films into the top ten with Thor grabbing fourth place with 88,000 units / $2.32 million for the week for totals of 1.58 million units / $46.65 million after 35 weeks of release. Captain America: The First Avenger was right behind with 82,000 units / $1.65 million for the week and 2.75 million / $67.19 million after 29 weeks of release.
Results like this show the value of a franchise crossover like The Avengers. Not only will fans of the individual franchises go see the movie, but if the movie is really well done, it will bring new fans to the other films.
Chuck: The Season Five opened in 11th place with 35,000 units / $958,000. An opening week Blu-ray share of 37% is excellent for a TV on DVD release.
WrestleMania: XXVIII was right behind with 34,000 units / $581,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 39%. It's nearly impossible to judge that figure, as there are so few other releases of this type, so there are simply not enough data to compare it against.
The only other new release to chart was Underworld: Franchise Box Set. This Blu-ray sold 27,000 units generating $1.07 million, further boosting Awakening's weekly haul.
With a strong Blu-ray release on top, the overall Blu-ray sales grew this week. Sales were up last week by 45% in terms of units and 51% in terms of revenue.
Compared to last year, sales rocketed up 175% in terms of units and 222% in terms of revenue.
DVD sales, on the other hand, were basically flat compared to last week and last year. This meant the overall Blu-ray share shot up to 44% in terms of units and 52% in terms of dollars, which is about double what it was this week last year.
Among the new releases for next week are four first-run releases, including two that should sell well on Blu-ray. Chronicle will likely lead the way, but The Grey might surprise.
As for last year, new releases were led by The Mechanic, which only managed second place on the DVD sales chart and only sold 230,000 units on Blu-ray. The third or fourth ranked Blu-ray should sell more than that this year.

http://www.the-numbers.com/interacti...hp?newsID=7283DVD Sales: Unbreakable Vow
There was a weird mix of new releases and ancient holdovers on the top of the DVD sales chart this week. (Maybe "ancient" is overstating things.)
Leading the way was The Vow with an impressive opening week sales of 810,000 units / $13.76 million. Given its domestic box office numbers, this is a great start and it is likely already profitable.
Underworld: Awakening was a distant second place with 466,000 units / $7.92 million. Underworld was more expensive than The Vow and performed worse at the box office. However, its Blu-ray sales will get it into the black. (We will get into more on Blu-ray in a little bit.)
Joyful Noise fell to third place with 141,000 units / $2.11 million for the week and 531,000 units / $7.94 million after two. A reasonable production budget will help it earn a profit sooner rather than later.
Bridesmaids bounced into the top five with 11
0,000 units / $1.17 million for the week, while its running tally reached 4.42 million units / $60.46 million after 34 weeks of release. I'm not sure why an 8-month old release winded up on the top five, but the lack of strong new releases probably had a lot to do with that.
It was joined by The Help, which placed fifth with 92,000 units / $1.49 million. After 23 weeks of release, the DVD has sold 4.91 million units and generated $82.97 million in revenue.
Chuck: Season Five opened in 13th place with 60,000 units / $1.63 million, which is strong for a TV on DVD release. WrestleMania: XXVIII debuted in 16th place with 53,000 units / $907,000. WrestleMania continues to be the only "sports" DVD to regularly earn a spot in the top 30 during its debut.

Among the May 15 new releases, the top seller will likely be either Universal’s The Grey or Fox’s Chronicle. The $64.5 million domestic box office take of Chronicle outpaced The Grey’s $51.6 million, but the star power of the latter film, which features Liam Neeson, should give it the edge on home video.
Other contenders include the Katherine Heigl vehicle One for the Money ($26.4 million), from Lionsgate, and Paramount’s The Devil Inside, a horror sleeper with a $53.3 million box office haul.
Kiosk embargoes give Money the edge on rentals.

HMM Nielsen Videoscan First Alert Sales Report Week Ending 05/13/12
http://www.homemediamagazine.com/res...les-spot-27347‘The Grey’ Trots Into Top Sales Spot
23 May, 2012
By: Thomas K. Arnold
'The Grey'
Two high-profile new theatrical features, Universal Studios’ The Grey and 20th Century Fox’s Chronicle, debuted in the two top spots on both national home video sales charts for the week ending May 20: the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks overall disc sales, as well as Nielsen’s Blu-ray Disc-only sales chart.
The Grey, an action-adventure film, starring Liam Neeson, about a group of oil workers struggling to make their way home after a plane crash in the bleak Alaskan tundra, earned $51.5 million in theaters.
Chronicle, a sci-fi drama about a group of teens who acquire powerful telekinetic abilities, grossed $64.5 million and, according to Nielsen data, sold about 80% as many discs as The Grey.
But neither title was among the week’s top 20 rentals, as tracked by Home Media Magazine, because both Universal and Fox delay shipping new releases to Netflix and Redbox, the two primary rental channels, by 28 days, in the hopes of boosting sales.
Even so, two other new releases snagged the two top rental spots: Paramount’s The Devil Inside ($53.3 million) bowed at No. 1, followed at No. 2 by the Lionsgate comedy One for the Money ($26.4 million).
The Devil Inside debuted at No. 9 on First Alert, selling just 14.5% as many units as The Grey. One for the Money bowed at No. 4, selling nearly 48% as many units as The Grey.
It is interesting to note that the two top sellers generated the majority of their total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc — 51% for The Grey and 58% for Chronicle – while the two top rentals each generated more than 75% of their total unit sales from standard DVD.
A fifth new release that fared surprisingly well was Rampart, a crime drama with Woody Harrelson, distributed by Millennium Entertainment. The film, which earned less than $1 million in theaters, nevertheless bowed at No. 7 on First Alert, No. 9 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart and No. 5 on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart.

The last couple weeks were helped not only by the better TBO comparison but also by the strength and genre of the leading titles.
Even though the only $100+ M title was a Romance in the last two weeks it did OK on Blu-ray but there finally were back to back weeks with Blu-ray friendly genre releases.

Note: No web link to charts available because of the holiday week..

Red Tails
Four new releases debuted in the four top spots on both national sales charts the week ended May 27.
The four, with box office earnings of between $19 million and $55 million, finished in the same order on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks overall disc sales, and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart.
The roll call: 20th Century Fox’s Red Tails ($49.9 million), a war drama about a crew of black pilots during World War II, debuted at No. 1. The film, which stars Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard, generated 48% of its first-week sales from Blu-ray Disc.
Another Fox film, the romantic comedy This Means War ($54.7 million), starring Reese Witherspoon, bowed at No. 2 on both charts, generating 44% of its unit sales from Blu-ray.
Coming at No. 3 on both charts was Walt Disney Studios’ The Secret World of Arrietty ($19.2 million), a 2010 anime title that moved 43% of its first-week units on Blu-ray Disc.
And debuting at No. 4 on both charts was Sony Pictures’ The Woman in Black ($54.3 million), a horror film starring Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, as a young lawyer who discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman in a remote village.
With Fox holding back new releases from Netflix and Redbox and The Secret Life of Arrietty aimed at the sellthrough crowd, The Woman in Black was the only one of the bunch to make the top 20 on Home Media Magazine’s weekly video rental chart, bowing at No. 1.
