Default It's Official: PS3 Price Cut to $499

Quote:
After several rounds of rumors and denials, Sony has officially announced via press release that the list price of the 60Gb model of its Blu-ray enabled PlayStation 3 will be reduced to $499 as of July 15.

In addition to the $100 price cut, the company also says it will introduce a new 80Gb edition of the console retailing for $599,

Hopefully this can have a knock on effect and get it sub £300 in the UK.

I have no clue why Sony is doing something so stupid like this announcement.

The 20gig-Version of the ps3 was already offered for $499 and nobody wanted it.

The new 80gig-Version is just wrong....20gig more (& Motorstorm) for an additional $100? C'mon Sony, you can do better than that.

yeah...as Markers said, considering that the 20gb version was previously available at $499, this move isn't going to do a damn thing to bump blu-ray player hardware sales. What they should've done, in addition to this, is re-introduced the 20gb model at $399. That would bring more people - guaranteed.

OK, let me get this straight; you can now buy a 60GB PS3 in the US for $499 (€366) while us Europeans get the prevailage of paying €630 ($858), that is pretty disgusting...

I wonder will we get a price drop in 4 months time....

Sorry to sound so negaitve but I am looking to get one and was already annoyed about the European pricing comapred to America and Japan, this just makes it a harder pill to swallow.

And 5 free Blu-Ray movies, and a less than 5% fail rate {actually it's less than 1% but I wanted to give 360-heads hope}

You forgot the part about 'No games' (yet). What do I care if I have 1% failure rates but nothing to play with...

Buying a Xbox360 is just getting better and better.

Do they have oxygen on your planet? Because I really don't see how you can have that little and still be able to type.

Buying a Breakdown360 is not a good financial option, for anyone, those who believe so are deluded into thinking that way by creative marketing and catchy songs from Donnie Darko.

Uhh, getting personal are we? Don't worry in 2 years when the ps3 games come (not the inferior xbox360 ports) you won't need that anymore.

Still have my Launch-Box and enjoying the loads of games already available and so looking forward for the games arriving soon. So, I don't see your point.

And when the Elite arrives in August I be in the line to get a second xbox360.

But back to the topic:

You seriously believe that this new 'offer' will help the ps3? Really?

Yeah, but the 20gig PS3 never had a wilreless connection, card readers or a HDMI output (as I recall).

Anyone can easily change the PS3 hard drive to a higher capacity one that retails locally - it's not rocket science.

Resistance, Motorstorm, Virtua Fighter 5 and Ninja Gaiden Sigma are all PS3 exclusive and they say hi. Lair, Heavenly Sword and Uncharted will be saying hi soon as well.

My first and 2nd 360 both died on me, and my PS3 is still flawless.

Hmmm... with 30% failure rates, no thanks.

Including the games that are to be released this year, there are around 100 out there.
