Default More HD DVD Titles Released in Q2 Than Blu-ray

From our just-posted story:

Quote:
Following a dryspell in the first quarter of this year, the HD DVD camp rebounded in Q2 to release more high-def titles than its next-gen rival.

According to industry tipsheet The DVD Release Report, 70 HD DVD titles hit store shelves during the period from April 1 through June 30, compared to 63 Blu-ray titles in the same timeframe.

That's quite a jump for HD DVD, which got trounced in the same metric by Blu-ray over the first three months of the year, releasing only 29 titles (compared to Blu-ray's 69). HD DVD backers have pointed to the format's dearth of new releases in the early part of the year as a primary reason for what quickly became a widening sales lead for Blu-ray.

I am assuming that count of 70 includes these titles:

04/24 Antarctica Dreaming
04/24 Digital Video Essentials
06/05 HD Window Hawaii
06/05 HD Window Great SW
06/05 Serenity Southern Seas
06/05 Visions of the Sea
06/19 Uncommon Bach
06/26 Freedom: Vol 1

and that the Matrix got counted twice (for the both versions)...

Blu ray did have Chris Botti Live...

Just wanted to point out that not all 'titles' are 'movies' which is a pre-conceived notion that I had...

Certainly good news for HD DVD, and Universal has really stepped up (it has not hurt them that Fox went silent and Disney has scaled back either).

I do wish that Universal's PQ/AQ quality would not have taken a back seat to the number of releases though...

spacejamz....no one ever said anything about movies until you had to state the obvious. They said titles, not movies, high def is not all about movies.

Wow, what FANTASTIC movies! I can't wait for "The War" and was surprised when I was the only one in line for "Daylight". Small potatoes. IMO none of the titles Uni. released would get people to buy HD-DVD players.

Both have their share of complete crap. To me their are far more titles I would like to own exclusive to HD-DVD than the other way. Really sad when you consider not only the higher price of Blu Ray hardware but also the much hyped BR "studio support" that has proven to be almost non existant.

Agreed. Universal could really help hd dvd sales if they would release more desireable titles. But I do like the fact that hd dvd is working overtime to reach more consumers. Blu-ray seems to be resting on its laurels a little too much. I understand that the leader can afford to do this a bit in any type of competition. But, that drives the other competitor to work that much harder to overtake. I think this gives hd dvd the edge, imho.

Pretty sad that even with more titles out that BD is still outselling HD DVD 2:1

It is because the majority of Universal's releases are catalog titles which, historically, do not sell very well.

When the article states "70 HD DVD titles to 63 Blu Ray titles" the natural assumption (IMO) is that these are all movies. With the exception of Planet Earth (which has proven to be one helluva an anomoly), what other titles are in the Top 20? Top 50 for that matter... I would be willing to be they are all MOVIES.

Not sure what your issue with me pointing this fact out is. There might be others out there who didn't realize what some of these 'titles' were.

Uh huh, titles are titles, why does it matter if they are HD DVD or Blu-ray? Blu-ray could have released those types of titles as well. So to try to state the obvious, only to try to spin the positive release amount is ridiculous.
