that's very odd. even if they're out of players, why would they possibly pull the existing movie stock off the floors?

My feelings exactly. "Thanks for buying a player during the promotion, but we don't stock the movies anymore". GREAT!

Some people will say this is not news, but I think it is. I wonder if this might be a trend we see until the christmas holidays with retailers?

Yeah I think it's definitely crippling news for HD-DVD. I think this news regarding Costco definitely means the format war has finally come to a conclusion. Anyone want to buy an A2 and 40 HD-DVDs?

Any chance we can get a subforum "My local store experience"

Would get rid of a ton of pointless posts.

Isn't this thread sort of a waste of time? I mean none of us know WTF is going on, right?

So is this just an excuse to post. *wink wink*

The Numbers: 900+ DVDs (rapidly declining), 34 HD-DVDs (+1 on order, + 5 free), 17 BDs (+2 on order). Last movie: Close Encounters.

Sorry for the confusion. The wal-mart comment originally contained a minor joke but I had to delete it as I couldn't get the HTML strikethrough tags to work (can anyone help on this?). Without them, it does give the impression that I may be serious.

I think it may come as a shock to HD DVD devotees that price is not the major factor in the format war.

On a personal note, today I think I have seen the first UK retailer dumping HD DVD at knock-down prices so it was kind of odd to find this thread.

He does after all recommend buying 4 copies of all your HD DVD discs and 360 games and rotate them like tyres in order to keep them in good working order.

My thoughts exacly. At least Costco HAD HD DVD. They never even bothered carrying Blu-ray. What does that say?!?! Is HD DVD winning? NO. So it means nothing...

Although I kinda like hearing what people have to say about whats going on at their local stores, it needs to be kept in perspective. From what I know about Costco (my "anonymous brother" worked at one for 6 years, seriously ), usually the stores just stock whatever the distributor ships them, and the items are left out untill they all sell. And it may be months untill the distributor ships the same item again. They're rarely pulled after just a week. Therefore it wouldn't suprise me that the players actually sold. BTW, I saw the same thing happen at my Costco. Big pallet of HD-D2s with a nice display, 1 week later... gone.

Sorry, I don't buy it. I was just there on Saturday. They had at least 20-30 players on the floor...with the display. And plenty of HD-DVD movies in the DVD section. All gone 5 days later...UH, NO!!! I go in that store once a week and NOTHING moves out that fast. Besides, the promotion was over and it was regular price!

Sadly, unless you live in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, it's a little difficult. The full details are in the HD DVD in urope thread in the sales rank forum. The Toshiba HD-E1 is being sold for £199.

Well... like I said "from what I know." What I think aint exactly gospel . But I did forget that you mentioned they cleared out the movies too... the two together is certainly strange. My Costco has never carried the movies, just the players. But I've seen them there more than once (different models #s, at that). I find it hard to believe that they'll get a shipment, collect dust, get pulled from the floor, and then put them back out a couple months later. Which is why I think, at least at my Costco, they're selling.
