Default First report: XBOX360 HD DVD sells 42K so far.

Not bad. Not bad at all.

http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=14737

Though they hilariously try to spin it with the "PS3/Blu-ray is 5X greater!!"

Expect this type of spin to continue. Like every PS3 owner is actually using it for blu-ray...or has an HDTV...(p.s. the PS3 doesn't even come with the necessary cables to even WATCH blu-ray. Nice job, Sony)

It's the spin which sold most companies on Blu-ray in the first place. Poses an interesting question, are the media sales matching or contradicting the hardware sales (actual overall units). Something isn't jiving with the amazon rankings and these numbers.

Yes, studios got suckered into the "there will be MILLIONS of Blu-ray players in homes!"

Adding blu-ray was a mistake. It should've been an add-on. Low risk and easy to actually track. But Sony wanted to corner the market so....

And are there Amazon numbers for the add-on. I think selling 42K $200 peripherals in less than a month is a great number! And each of those 42K bought the drive SPECIFICALLY for HD DVD movies. You don't have to wonder what they're using it for.

I'm working on getting Microsoft's official numbers from my rep. Those numbers don't seem right to me.

Too high or too low?

They don't to me either, but I deal with NPD in my job, the numbers are POS data based, so unless alot of retailers didn't report in or there's a mistake on the SKUs then they should be accurate. But they do seem extremely low.

Too low? Wow. That's from just a few week's sales for a device with virtually no advertising. I think it's pretty damned good.

42,000...far from the HD DVD is owning Blu-ray rhetoric we were hearing just a few days ago and how that there is more than likely more HD DVD players in peoples homes than Blu-ray players. Quite telling.

In addition, I surely remember how I heard there were going to be 500,000 HD DVD players in people's homes by the end of the year. Quite telling yet again. An abysmal telling.

You're a lost soul. There's absolutely no way to spin this as a negative.

This drive went on sale in mid-November. By the 25th, they sold 42,000. That means 42,000 copies of King Kong are out there. And being this is the XBOX360 crowd (who buy lots of software), I GUARANTEE each new owner went out and bought 1 if not 2 new HD DVDs (I've had mine for a little over 2 weeks and have 28 HD DVD)

This is a $200 peripheral with almost no advertising and stores like Best Buy pushing the other format down customers throats. These sales DIRECTLY coincide with HD DVD movies continuously outselling blu-ray discs (especially if it's the same movie).

I know this stung you to the very core of your soul, but trying to spin this as a negative really shows a desperation usually reserved for people stranded on the the slopes of Mt. Everest.

To put in perspective, if the numbers are correct, PS3 would need 1/5 users to be active movie watchers to match the sales levels of HD media. The usage blend is the last thing that's missing from the puzzle.

Also given that they forecasted the industry increase incorrectly by 19% (around 240,000 dollars) might mean that we're still not seeing a true picture. Maybe there was an issue in accounting for the drives and that's why no numbers were released. Anyway, I'd take NPD numbers at face value unless there's another indication as to why they can't be trusted. Would be nice to see a copy of it to note exceptions/exclusions.

The number does seem lower than the number Microsoft has been talking about. They said they were going to have over 100,000 shipped by the end of November, and with stores constantly selling out it's hard to believe they only went through 43,000. Until Microsoft, or Toshiba who helped create the drive, announce numbers I would take the 43,000 with a grain of salt.

Just FYI, if the numbers from NPD saying there were 510k units of 360's sold in Nov, then 42k HD drives sold would be 8.24%

That's pretty good for a $200 add on in it's first month.

I can't see how a near 10% attach rate could be bad.....

Although, it does seem a bit on the low side.....but it's also not unrealistic.....Nor is it a 'fatal' number either....

Here in Germany it was practically impossible to get that addon with Toshiba failing to deliver their players. The first one, the A2 (here E1), is expected to come in a few days, the XE1 (AX2) won't be released before the end of January. I was happy to get one but had to ask around a bit. This addon definitely had some impact. However, most american PS3 owners HAVE used the console to watch a movie because you can expect them to have watched the included BluRay movie (can't wait for the PS3 here with Casino Royale included)

Yeah, but the PS3 doesn't come with any hi-def cables. Also, not all (I doubt even the majority) of PS3 owners have HDTVs. So those owners definitely are NOT watching Talladega Nights.

And remember, since the release of the add-on, there was a SPIKE in HD DVD sales.

The same can't be said for blu-ray since the release of the PS3.

And yet HD DVD sales are still higher than Blu-ray! All the shops I have been in are still sold out of HD DVD drives and are still filling preorders too. Disk sales will get even more interesting as they get towards 500k drives, be that this year or next.
