I think HDTVs are quickly becoming the norm if they haven't already. At least in my area its harder to find an SDTV than it is an HDTV at the local retail. I presently own 3 HDTVs - 2 plasma and 1 CRT - love the picture of my panny CRT.

My local Best Buy doesn't even sell CRT sets anymore.

I myself wonder how I lived these past 20 years without high definition...it just boggles my mind.
But I have now been a proud owner of a Samsung DLP 50" HDTV for a little over 2 years. I will definitely be getting their new line of LED HDTVs in the coming months.
Now we just have to keep the studios accountable. There's no reason why any released from 2008 and on can't have ALL 1080p content, which includes supplemental features, and 5.1 or higher lossless audio track. On that same note, any movie released on MUST have a lossless 5.1 track, not lossless 4.0, lossless 3.0, lossless 2.0, or the dreadful lossless 1.0. LOSSLESS 5.1 OR HIGHER. We consumers must demand this high standard every time.

Now on to Ultra High Definition...

Maybe the content is only available in SD format? Like shot or mastered on VT?

Star Trek TNG for instance was mastered on VHS tape, there's no high def master available... The same will be true for many featuretts found on bluray.

There are plenty of reasons that especially special features might be in SD, unless you want them pre-upconverted, which would hog disc space. Many "behind the scenes" things, especially in the past, were shot on 480i videotape. Also, some movies that were made in mono or stereo simply don't need 5.1 lossless, that is always a matter of remastering the soundtrack, which doesn't always come across that great. Some people are more concerned with recreating the theatrical experience made by the director, which wasn't always 5.1. And you say any blu released since 2008 should have 1080p. What about things shot in 1080i, as many live events and television shows were? Once again, pre-upscaling would just hog disc space.

Also, if BD catches on enough in the future to make DVD less common, we may see shows shot on 480i tape being released on BD with a higher bitrate, and more episodes per disc, but letting the player or TV do the upscaling. It would be pointless to convert "All in the Family" or "Three's Company" to 1080p. Storage capacity may be used in the future for shows like this, having single disc complete series for some shows etc. However, for now, it is best to release them on DVD, the higher bitrate isn't going to make a huge difference on older shows, and putting them on DVD means people with DVD players OR BD players can still use them. That and I'm sure it is cheaper to manufacture 5 DVD set of a 480i show than a single BD. I could be wrong, but I would think that is the case at this point.

I have three HDTVs and I not one SDTV anymore. One 1080p LCD, and two 1080i RP CRTs.

Right now I have a projector for movies and a 8-year-old Magnavox CRT tube, but I watch maybe an hour of TV a week, so I can't really justify an upgrade. Hell, I can barely justify Dish Network's most basic package.
