Default Xbox 360 as a HD-DVD?

Can the Xbox 360 can play HD-DVD's?
If yes then 720p or 1080p?
Can I buy an HDMI cable for the Xbox and hook it up to my Receiver in HDMI and from there to my Projector?

Tnx, LeorD

it can only play hd dvd if you buy the hd dvd add on for it (no longer produced and hard to find now) it can do both 720p and 1080p depending on your projector

don't know about the last one though

All of the XBOX 360's would require the add on to play HD's. Not every model has HDMI but those that do not will play the HD's back in 1080 over the cables (the 5 cable type). For cables any HDMI would work, look at http://www.monoprice.com for good prices.

The only way to get 1080p on HD DVDs and DVD upscaling on the 360 is through the HDMI and VGA cables. If your console does not have HDMI port, then use the VGA cable. However this interface does not get you sound, you would have to connect an optical cable or red/white RCA cables.

If you use the standard component cables you will only get 1080i and it will NOT upscale DVDs.

You have to buy the HD DVD drive separately, no matter what model of Xbox you decide to buy (Arcade, Premium, Elite) if you want to play HD DVDs. However, you can upscale SD DVDs right out out the box, if you use the HDMI or VGA cable. You do not need the HD DVD drive to do it.

Yes the 360 can play hd dvds (with addon), yes it plays them at full 1080P hd. The only drawback is you only get legacy audio support out of it, to many HDM customers that's a pretty big drawback. It's worth noting that HD DVD SALs can be picked up for pennies on the dollar and will give you lossless TrueHD support which is basically all you need for HD DVD.

Question

About DD+ and the HD DVD add-on, does it really matter for Warner Brother HD's with DD+? I thought the DD+ audio was really just equal to standard DD audio, so that playing WB HD DVDs through the add on or through a stand alone would be equal. Is this correct, or does the add on still hamper DD+ tracks with WB movies?

DD is running at a rate of 448 kbps or around 640 kbps, while DD+ ran equivalent to DTS which is 1.5 mbps sound, so yes you would notice a different between DD and DD+ for sure if you could compare them. Actually, although TrueHD, DTS-MA and LPCM are highly touted, in many instances (unless you have expensive surround sound speakers) many people don't notice any significant upgrade from DTS or DD+ to TrueHD or DTS-MA.
But there is some good news : An update for the XBOX 360 audio allowed that if you hook up your XBOX 360 so that the sound is going thru an optical cable or HDMI cable (doesn't matter which one) to your receiver that if the HD DVD contains a TrueHD or DD+ track they will be converted to DTS at 1.5 mbps, so you won't really lose anything much audio-wise with DD+ tracks, and very little with TrueHD. Is TrueHD at 1.5 mbps as good as full TrueHD? No, but it is a heck of alot better than 640 kbps which is what you'd get if the 360 down-converted the sound to DD.

Thanks for the above you posted. I know about the supposed difference of DD+, but doesn't Warner ignore that and still retain their DD+ tracks to 640 kbps? So is there really a difference between their DD+ tracks and their DD overall?

What I really mean is that if you exclusively had WB HD DVD's that only had DD+ tracks and a 360 add-on, would there be any difference between the add-on audio and the stand alone audio?

In my opinion, no, you wouldn't notice any difference.

No there wouldn't be... That said Universal mostly used 1.5Mbps, so did paramount and then there's the great many titles released that have lossless audio.
