Microsoft Corp. announced it will lower the price of the popular Xbox 360™ HD DVD Player from $199 to $179 ERP (United States only) starting Aug. 1, 2007, and will add five free HD DVD movies for anyone purchasing an Xbox 360 HD DVD Player between Aug. 1 and Sept. 30. In addition, Microsoft further solidified the Xbox 360 as the ultimate high-definition (HD) entertainment platform, with key announcements around the HD DVD launches of “300” from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group and “Heroes: Season 1” from Universal Studios.

This is a killer offer, I think HD DVD sales will spike quite sharply starting in August. For consumers who pull this off with the King Kong/universal remote pack (still quite common in Canada at least, if the offer goes north of the border as well), it's an incredible deal.

Personally I think that both blu-ray and hd-dvd are trying to win support the wrong way. Giving away free movies for every player sold is not what is appealing to the general customer, especially for formats that might not be around in a few years. Most people (the average consumer, not the people who write in these HD forums) do not want to waste money and feel perfectly fine waiting a few years until a winner is decided. However, a lot of these average buyers might be persuaded to jump into the HD era if the players were exceptionally cheap and then they could just rent the HD movies from Netflix or Blockbuster (Total Access). A lot of these adds state that the 5 free movies are a $140 value. Why not subtract $140 off the player instead? The Microsoft HD-DVD add-on would only be $40. Do you know how many Xbox 360 owners would buy the add-on if it was only $40. The HD-DVD camp would probably double or triple their installed base in a matter of 5 months, especially with the holiday season beginning a few short months.
Granted Microsoft and other HD player manufacturers can't take a financial hit like that but the movie studio's obviously can. If they are giving away free movies anyways, just stop that and give that money to the companies making the players. I'm sure Sony fans would also love to see $140 off the price of the PS3. Both formats would be wise to try a tactic like this. Offering free movies on unproven formats really only appeal to the to the die hards who are already collecting. I myself own a PS3 and Microsoft's HD-DVD add-on. Sony Bravia KDL 52XBR3 Harman Kardon CP 65 5.1 home theater I only rent HD movies on both formats. Own "King Kong" because it was free with HD-DVD add-on |

I called Toshiba Canada and MS Canada and they said the 5 disc deal is not available to Canadians. Toshiba stated they are now placing three pack in movies with their HD DVD players instead.
Can anyone confirm? |

Can you select any HD DVD title so far released or is it one of those things where you get to pick from like 10 or 12 movies?
